Full Job Description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included. 

This is a fulltime post of 37 hours per week, with a shift pattern of Monday to Friday, 8.45am-17.00pm.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, highly motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist to join the Scottish Microbiology Laboratories (SMiRL) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. SMiRL plays a key role in the provision of specialist and reference testing for a wide range of pathogens, as well as supporting clinical decisions, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, vaccine surveillance, public health policy formulation, and outbreak management for the Scottish population. SMiRL actively participates in internal and external training and education, collaborative research and development, and has a close working relationship with Public Health Scotland (PHS) and other stakeholders responsible for human and animal health in Scotland.
The post holder will be a key member of the team responsible for developing and delivering a comprehensive range of highly specialised phenotypic and molecular techniques for use with the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory (SMiRL), Glasgow. These methods demand highly skilled performance. The post holder will also contribute to the quality control of the laboratories phenotypic and molecular methods and will carry out service development of methods as required. The post holder will contribute to molecular developments projects within the department, including the use of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). They will contribute to routine reporting of reference laboratory results and preparation of other reports on a regular basis, clinical audit, applied research and will contribute to the training of medical, scientific and technical staff The post holder will work independently, autonomously, and unsupervised and will be responsible for delegating, reviewing and organising the work of their team in SMiRL. They will provide reciprocal cover and support for other Clinical Scientists in the department, to providing leadership to other members of staff and ensure the continuation of service delivery. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic with proven knowledge and skills across Clinical Microbiology. This roles involves gaining expertise across all SMiRL services whilst providing the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop a special interest in a specific area of the services. This demanding role will involve having to manage multiple tasks, problem solve and provide clinical advice to a wide range of users across Scotland. The candidate will be expected to have excellent verbal and written communication skills involving tact and diplomacy to engage with healthcare scientists and stakeholders at a national and international level. The post holder will be supported to develop highly specialised clinical expertise to prepare them for consultant level posts.

Applicants require:

  • Upper second or first class Honours degree in relevant science e.g. /Medical Microbiology
  • Masters Degree (MSc) in a relevant field or equivalent qualification
  • Completion of the nationally accredited STP scientist training scheme (3 years) or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration as a Clinical Scientist. Individuals who have submitted completed portfolios at the time of application will also be considered for this role
