ISG/ITI Communications Infrastructure Services (CIS)
Full-time: 35 hours per week
Open-ended: permanent
We are looking for a Network Technician to fill the role of Communication Technician in the support of the University of Edinburgh’s Network.
The network underpins all university activities including research, learning and teaching, student accommodation, conference and events as well as university operations. With a population of over 50,000 users, you will help support services to more than 250 locations across Edinburgh. This challenging role ensures the network is available 24/7 for all users and that incidents are responded to promptly to minimise any disruption. The post requires one week in four on call working.
You will be joining the team as we approach the end of a full University network replacement and start to prepare for phase 2, where we will look to maximise the benefits of the new technology and further improve the service.

What the job involves:
· Installing, testing and commissioning data network equipment.
· Analysing, diagnosing and resolving faults in the data network.
· Configuring and testing software systems and hardware components prior to deployment in the field.
· Creating and updating online diagrams and records.
· Routine operational configuration changes.
A bit about you:
· Qualified to HND level or higher in a relevant area, and/or relevant experience in a similar environment; or relevant experience involving progressively more demanding work.
· A good working knowledge of a range of data networking, telecommunications and security technologies, acquired over a number of years, with a basic understanding of the principles underlying the technology.
· Experience in the use of network installation and monitoring tools.
· An appreciation of electrical regulations, Health and Safety standards and relevant building regulations.
· The ability to analyse and solve difficult technical problems in a calm, rational manner whilst under pressure.
· Full clean UK driving licence for and ideally your own car for on call and flexibly attending site.

About the Team
The Communications Infrastructure section is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the University’s data network, the telephone system, external connections to other networks, and for managing the access control door and alarm monitoring system. There are about 82,000 ports on the data network, 11,000 telephone extensions, 600 access control doors and
1,000 alarms. The turnover of the new section exceeds £2.5M annually. The section has about 30 staff, and comprises three very busy and hard-working teams which are dedicated to providing an excellent service to University staff, students and external stakeholders.
