Full Job Description

Would you enjoy the challenge of anaesthetic practice in Orkney? Would you like a change? You would be working in a new hospital, contributing to the delivery of perioperative care, anaesthesia and resuscitation of patients for transfer to mainland centres. We are looking for an experienced consultant anaesthetist to join us in developing the anaesthesia services in a remote and rural hospital of 44 beds, serving the local population of 22,000. You should possess strong skills in general, anaesthetic practice. Team working is crucial to the effective delivery of care and strong interpersonal skills are essential. NHS Orkney is a collaborative organisation, working in close liaison with colleagues in NHS Grampian and our national, emergency retrieval teams. What can we offer you?

  • We are open to working flexibly with the right candidate and can offer full-time, part-time, or annualised hours. This would allow you to combine a contract in Orkney with other commitments and to live locally or commute from elsewhere.
  • We can support periods of leave to work in larger centres for maintenance and/or development of clinical skills
  • Appropriate study leave
  • Stunning location with diverse natural resources and a rich culture to explore

Orkney is a wonderful place to live and work and has been voted the happiest place to live in the UK, offering excellent schools, good leisure facilities, amazing scenery and unique wildlife. The excellent ferry and air connections make travel to the Scottish mainland, Shetland, and even Norway quite straightforward.
  • There is a rich archaeological history to be explored, as well as many outdoor pursuits, including walking, cycling, bird watching, sea-kayaking, scuba diving and many more. Orcadian culture is rich, with music, arts and crafts being well represented. The Orkney Folk Festival in May and the St Magnus Music Festival in June are internationally renowned.
