Consultant Physician in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine

NHS Lanarkshire - University Hospital Hairmyres

University Hospital Hairmyres is excited to appoint a Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Endocrinology to join our existing team. This is currently made up of 4 full time consultants with a part-time GP with a special interest in diabetes.

 The department is also supported by 2.0 WTE diabetes nurse specialists, experienced diabetes dietitians and specialist podiatrists. There is also a dedicated day unit for endocrine investigations and a full time endocrine specialist nurse with excellent on-site biochemistry and radiology services.

The department, as well as providing General Endocrine and General Diabetes clinics, also provide subspecialty clinics including Young Persons Diabetes Services, Transition Diabetes services, Type 1 Diabetes and Insulin Pump Clinics. There are also specialty endocrine clinics including radio-iodine services. We also have a multi-disciplinary podiatry clinics supported by on-site Vascular and Interventional Radiology services. The successful candidate, if interested can also contribute to the diabetes ante-natal clinic although these are provided at another site.

The department has an active research wing with dedicated nurse support and input from specialty trainees.

There is a strong multi-disciplinary team working with weekly MDT meetings with our community diabetes specialist nurses and monthly local Diabetes-Biochemistry MDTs. The department is also well supported regionally inputting into the Regional Adrenal MDT as well as Regional Pituitary MDTs based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the running of the Diabetes & General medicine ward of University Hospital Hairmyres providing senior medical support to junior doctors together with 3 of other full time consultants.

The successful candidate will join the Acute and General Physicians who all contribute an equal share to the running of the Acute Medical Receiving Unit which is well supported by our Specialist Minor/Major Injury Nurses Treatment Service (MINTS) Nurses, Physician Associate as well as our junior medical tier doctors. They will also contribute towards the Medical Assessment Unit which is again supported by our MINTS nurses and junior doctors.

The candidate will be part of the On-Call rota which is variable and flexible depending on the commitments of the team and will also contribute to overnight and weekend on-call rotas.

The candidate will have the opportunity to develop sub-specialty interests such as diabetes in-patient ward rounds, mineral metabolism services or a sub-specialty interest of the candidate and will be encouraged and supported by the department.
