NHS Ayrshire and Arran are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team as a Consultant in ENT. This replacement ENT Consultant post is available to support the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Team & Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP) within NHS Ayrshire & Arran.        

The successful candidate will complement the current team of five other Consultant in ENT, three consultants in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, two visiting consultants in Restorative Dentistry and two Orthodontist, who make up the Head and Neck Directorate. This is a full time position. We are a strong team with diverse specialist skills and experience who support each other and our patients as we strive to deliver the best possible care.

ENT sits as a specialty within the Head & Neck Directorate within Surgical Services, part of Acute Services. The successful applicant will have an interest in Otology, Cochlear Implant Surgery and Paediatric ENT, joining a team of two established Cochlear Implant surgeons who provide the national Scottish Cochlear Implant Service.

Adult and Paediatric Emergency and elective ENT services are provided to the Ayrshire & Arran catchment population of 375,000 residents and the department also provides the National Cochlear Implant Service which serves all patients in Scotland.

The main base for this post is University Hospital Crosshouse where ENT in-patient and day-case services are located.  Out-patient Clinics are provided at University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr.  Specialist clinics include a middle ear implant clinic, neck lump and head and neck oncology clinics, cochlear clinic and balance clinic. The postholder will participate on the consultant on-call rota (currently1:6 with prospective cover). On call duties are supported by a full middle grade tier.

The successful candidate will play an active role within the National Cochlear Implant Service, working with the team and patients throughout all stages of cochlear implantation - pre-implant assessment, contributing to the monthly MDT, surgery and lifelong follow up.  The post holder will also contribute to service development, clinical audit and research and represent the service at meetings within the UK and internationally. 

The current post holder has indicated their intention to retire by the end of June 2025 and our ambition is to have a replacement in place by April 2025 to allow a comprehensive handover period.

The Terms and Conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004 and sessions are offered on a 10 PA basis. Applications from individuals who may wish to work fewer programmed activities are welcomed. 

Appropriately experienced applicants must have full GDC Registration and be on the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics, having undergone higher specialist training or able to demonstrate equivalent training and experience.
