NHS Grampian invites enthusiastic applicants for a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist or a Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in Paediatric Oncology (at least 2 years of training in a GRID accredited centre), based within Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital (RACH). This is a 40 hour per week, permanent post. The post holder will join three other Consultants in Paediatric Oncology and Haematology, based at RACH and working within the Managed Service Network for Children and Young People's Cancer (MSNCYPC). The successful appointee will contribute to the Haematology/Oncology consultant-of-the-week on call rota, covering 10-14 weeks per year.

The Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital has a total of 85 beds, providing specialist inpatient and outpatient care in Medical Paediatrics and other sub-specialities including general Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery, ENT, Dermatology, Orthodontics, Ophthalmology, Clinical Genetics and Child and Family Psychiatry. The Haematology Oncology Team has a dedicated 7 bedded In Patient Unit as well as a 6 bedded Day Case Unit. A 10 bedded Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) receives the vast majority of unscheduled Medical Paediatric and Emergency Department admissions. Children stay up to 24 hours and if not discharged are transferred to the Medical Ward. The 30 bedded Medical Ward directly receives elective and unscheduled Oncology admissions as well as patients with chronic conditions such as Diabetes and Cystic Fibrosis. The 4 bedded High Dependency Unit is a facility for all medical and surgical specialties. The Department of Community Child Health and a purpose built Child Protection Suite are located within the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. RACH has its own Emergency Department under direct consultant supervision. There are approximately 8000 attendances annually.

A healthy balance between activities at work and out of work is readily achievable at NHSG. Aberdeen offers all the attractions of any major city. Aberdeenshire boasts many picturesque towns and villages within easy commuting distance and provides access to an enormous range of outdoor pursuits, ranging from fishing to skiing. There are excellent facilities available for high quality education, both state and private. Excellent transport links ensure that Edinburgh and Glasgow are less than 3 hours by train and the Aberdeen airport has multiple flights daily to London and many other destinations across the UK and Europe.

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview. Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP). Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made. Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post).

Informal enquiries may be made to:

  • Dr Fiona Herd, Consultant Paediatrician Oncologist

  • Dr Gordon Taylor, Consultant Haematologist
