General Medical Council

Council Members

Remuneration £18,000; Time commitment circa three days a month

Location: National

We are seeking to appoint one registrant member and one lay member for our governing Council.

Working across all four countries of the UK, our vision is to be an effective, relevant and compassionate regulator, who supports the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. As health services in the UK continue to face intense pressure, regulation has a pivotal role to play in protecting patients and promoting the wellbeing of the workforce. We have set ambitious commitments to address inequality, embrace diversity, and support inclusion within healthcare, both as a regulator and an employer. Championing this work is a key focus for our Council and you will play a vital part in shaping healthcare in the years ahead.

You will be joining at a landmark moment, as the legislation which underpins our work is changing. From December 2024 we take on the regulation of physician associates and anaesthesia associates, ahead of wider reforms for doctors. Leading this much needed programme of reform will positively affect how we work with our registrants, patients and the public across all our functions. Our Council will play a key role in helping us define the programme that best achieves our strategic ambitions.

Our Council comprises 12 members from across the UK (six lay and six registrant). It sets our strategy, defines our high-level policies and is responsible for making sure that we fulfil our statutory and charitable purposes. We are currently seeking two new members who must be able to contribute to setting this strategy, exercising oversight and ensuring effective corporate governance. We are seeking strong and demonstrable non-executive experience and a background in leading organisations through complex change. Exposure to working at the government/political interface would also be of particular interest, and active clinical experience and clinical leadership is sought for the registrant role. Applications for both roles are welcomed from across all four countries of the UK, but we are particularly keen to encourage applications from Wales, due to the current Welsh member’s term of office ending December 2024.

The time commitment for the appointments will average around three days a month and remuneration is £18,000 per year.

We are committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation; one that reflects those we work with and for. We actively encourage those with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply to work with us.
