Technical Services provides in-house consultancy to DIO and the wider MOD, the specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span Construction, Engineering, Health and Safety, Safety Systems, Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, Access and Recreation, Historic Environment and Natural Environment.
The post advertised is for 37 hours net, however the Ministry of Defence offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for employees. Flexible working, Part-time working and Job Share working patterns will be considered., DIO Technical Services is a multi-disciplinary team which provides technical subject-matter expertise across a wide range of disciplines to support the operation of the Defence estate and land on which the MOD operates, both in the UK and overseas. The Team provides impartial and objective Intelligent Customer Capability to DIO, MOD and wider government, supporting UK Defence outputs world-wide. The specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span construction, engineering, electronic and physical security requirements, safety systems, environmental management, sustainable development, access and recreation, historic environment, and natural environment.
The Senior Electrical Engineer (LV HAZ) will be a member of Electrical Infrastructure Team in DIO Technical Services and will support the Head of Electrical Infrastructure Team / Principal Electrical Engineer (PEE), who holds the technical responsibility in the following main areas:
+ The implementation and administration of the MODs Electrical Safe System of Work (JSP375 Volume 3 Chapter 3) including the development of the Safety Rules and Procedures.
+ Assurance on activities on electrical system, equipment, and Safe System of Work
+ Development of policies and technical standards on electrical infrastructure and equipment.
+ Investigation of electrical incidents, accidents, and near misses and, where necessary, publication of safety alerts, technical bulletin, information notes etc.
+ Undertake research & development in support of the above
+ The representation of MOD/DIO on legislative, standardisation, industry, and MOD committees in the UK and abroad.
As the Senior Electrical Engineer (LV HAZ); you will be primarily responsible for:
+ Low voltage installations and equipment in potentially explosive areas
+ Local generation incl. renewables and earthing
+ Safe Systems of Work (Hazardous Areas).
Your main tasks (but not limited to) will be:
+ Support PEE leading the team/section and function.
+ Undertaking assurance activities on MODs Safe System of Work such as - competency assessments on Authorised Engineer (AE), peer reviews on safety audit reports, technical briefs, reports, drawings, and specifications etc.
+ Drafting, updating, or maintaining DIO publications such as policy, technical standards, safety alerts, technical bulletins, information notes etc in the area of responsibility.
+ Providing technical assurance and specialist support on LV equipment and installation on hazardous areas on the MOD Sites.
+ Acting as a SME or a Technical Advisor on electrical incidents and accident investigations; and if necessary, conduct or lead an investigation.
+ Represent the MOD/DIO on Working Group and Committees or meeting in the UK and abroad., Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.), or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or actively working towards achieving Professional Membership., This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

Presentation
+ Candidates who are successful at application sift will be expected to deliver a short (10 minute) presentation on the day of the interview. The presentation topic will be disclosed upon invite to interview.

Interviews are currently taking place remotely via MS Teams, this will be confirmed with the successful candidates who are invited to an interview and will be conducted week commencing: 09/12/2024.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
+ Knowledge and work-experience of HV or LV electrical or Building Services (Electrical) or AGL systems., Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.), or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or actively working towards achieving qualifications. Please note that this does not apply to graduates in Electrical Engineering or Building Services that have an interest in developing a career in an Electrical Engineering Discipline. However, evidence of a strong academic background in Electrical Engineering and an interest on aeronautical ground lighting system should be clearly demonstrated in the Personal Statement to get an invitation for the interview., We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

Where business needs allow, this role may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working, therefore you must consider if any of the above locations are within a reasonable travelling distance. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business (i.e., detached duty) or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
