Full Job Description

To train and assess Police Officers and Staff in Police driving techniques, to raise the student’s skill and ability from that of the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency to a higher level of competence.


Police Scotland requires high standards of driving from the drivers within the organisation and we are seeking enthusiastic and experienced driving instructors to train and assess our officers and staff.


The primary role of a Police Scotland driving instructor is to instruct Police Officers and Police Staff in practical driving techniques and emergency response driving, including providing practical demonstrations and teaching a uniform system of car control (based on Roadcraft Manual).


You will have responsibility for assessing student performance using a range of methods and evidence, writing formal student assessments and other reports, providing counselling and agreeing action plans where required.


You will have responsibility for the daily care, maintenance and cleanliness of all vehicles used by the department and where appropriate, the transportation of vehicles to and from training areas and vehicle workshops.


We will also expect you to assist in preparing, reviewing and updating training materials in relation to existing or projected training courses to ensure delivery and content remains current. You will undertake course administration functions including the facilitation of training programmes.


You will hold a full DVSA category B driving licence and possess previous training and experience in emergency response driving instruction.


Primacy will be given to those with experience as an “Advanced” Police Driving Instructor, and who can work from the Scottish Police College, (Tulliallan), however consideration may be given to suitably qualified applicants in delivering “Standard” level instruction from various locations across Scotland. Please state on your application form your ability to work at the Scottish Police College, Tulliallan, and where this is not possible your preferred home division.
