Full Job Description

The General Assistant will report to the Hawick Shop Manager., This role intended to provide support to the Shop Manager and Assistant Shop Manager in the daily running of the Hawick warehouse/shop. Tasks will be varied and a flexible and enthusiastic approach to the role is required. Occasional van cover may be required for which overtime will be paid., Duties will include:

  • To assist and advise customers and undertake sales and deliveries.

  • To take incoming calls and emails from donors, and organising collection of goods.

  • To assist with the pricing of donated items and booking stock onto the computerised point of sale (POS) system.

  • To assist with moving stock around the warehouse.

  • To provide collection / delivery cover on the van when required.

  • To manage an efficient schedule for the van, to maximise the use of its capacity, minimise fuel consumption, and keep sold items moving regularly.

  • To comply with all Home Basics policies, procedures, practices and regulations.

  • To help ensure adherence to all health & safety requirements and guidelines.

  • In agreement with the Manager, to provide holiday and sickness cover for other staff.

  • To undertake other duties as appropriate to the post.

    Good level of I.T. in an office capacity (inc Microsoft Word, Excel, internet, email and social media).

  • Good literacy and numeracy.

  • Moving and lifting training

  • Ability to work as a team member.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Experience in dealing with members of the public.

  • Friendly telephone manner.

  • Experience of office systems, filing, and organisation.

  • Good knowledge of the geography and road systems for the Borders.

  • Flexibility to be able to multi-task.

  • Experience of working with websites.

  • Experience of managing transport logistics.

  • A good level of fitness required for lifting and moving furniture.

  • To be positive and self-motivated towards the goals of the post.

  • To have a problem-solving approach when required.

  • Being polite and courteous.

  • Excellent communication skills.

    Contract: Initially for one year, with the opportunity for the post to become permanent.

  • Hours: 13 to 16.5 hours per week (hours flexible to suit the right candidate, and includes
    alternate Saturdays)
    Rate £12.00 per hour (linked to Living Wage Foundation).,
  • 6.5 hours per day, 9.00 - 4.00pm, with ½ hour unpaid lunch break.

  • Saturdays are 9.45 - 1.15pm.

  • Annual leave 7.6 weeks per year, 2 weeks taken over Xmas & New Year.

  • Salary paid into bank account on 21st month
