Full Job Description

Applicants are sought to join the dedicated team of technicians supporting research and teaching activities in the School of Biology, predominantly in the Biomolecular Sciences Building (BMS) at the North Haugh in St Andrews. You will be helping to enable world leading science at the interface of biology, chemistry, physics and medicine by providing friendly and effective routine laboratory housekeeping. Key tasks include:

  • Collecting used glassware / plasticware from laboratories, washing and drying this, and returning it to its allocated location.
  • Operating and undertaking routine maintenance of the equipment you use, and reporting any equipment or service issues to your manager.
  • Supporting laboratory housekeeping eg by pipette tip racking, autoclaving, aliquoting reagent stocks, discarding expired Drosophila food from containers, running water taps periodically to ensure compliance with Legionella legislation.
  • Providing temporary cover for fellow glasswashers, media kitchen staff and Laboratory Stewards during periods of absence.
  • Complying with standard health and safety processes and policies relating to this role at all times.

    Nat 5 or Standard grades in Maths and English, or relevant experience with the ability to communicate effectively with a range of personalities including service users, managers, maintenance engineers, etc.
  • Experience of providing a maintenance service for multiple end-users. Experience in a laboratory environment will be an advantage.
  • Proven ability to organise daily routine and learn new tasks.
  • Use and basic maintenance of the equipment required to undertake the role.
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively and comfortably as part of a team and suggest improvements if necessary.
  • Comfortable in a role where short-term and long-term changes can often be expected.
  • Keen attention to Health and Safety standards.
