Full Job Description

Our world-leading Time and Frequency Department seek a graduate or experienced Scientist/Engineer with a passion for experimental learning to join our Optical Frequency Metrology Group.

You will be joining us at an exciting time - we are expanding our portfolio of projects involving optical frequency combs.

Femtosecond combs support the performance verification of the next generation of compact optical atomic clocks. They help us to disseminate stable optical references and allow clocks operating at different frequencies, in different locations, to be compared. This enables us to verify clock performance before their deployment in the field; for

  • The synchronisation of telecommunication networks

  • The synchronisation of defence networks

  • Sensing changes in magnetic fields and gravitational potentials

  • Much more…

  • Based at the University of Strathclyde, you will collaborate with prominent Scientists to develop test and evaluation capability, participate in future-focused research, and have the opportunity to work towards your PhD as part of your role if you do not already hold one.,
  • Provide support to industrial partners and collaborators through provision of knowledge and access to high performance Time & Frequency capability.

  • Design and follow a scientific work plan. Write technical documentation and scientific publications, both collaboratively and independently.

  • Use scientific computing to analyse complex data sets such as optical absolute frequencies and ratios.

  • Develop laboratory instrumentation and control systems for frequency stabilization.

  • Develop hardware control and data analysis scripts, ideally using Python and/or Matlab.

  • Design and implement optical experimental setups

  • Establish the Health & Safety and Quality processes and procedures that will be critical to support the ongoing service delivery from the Lab

We believe that diversity and unique perspectives are key to the success of our science projects. For this role, we particularly encourage applications from candidates underrepresented in STEM disciplines, in particular women, disabled, black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates.

  • Reporting to a Senior Scientist, you will use your analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute to the design, implementation, and operation of optical frequency metrology infrastructure, whose performance surpasses the current microwave standards.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills, experience, and qualifications:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering, or a related field (working towards achieving a PhD is within the scope of this role)

  • Proven experience and strong practical aptitude in experimental laboratory work to complete tasks requiring high - attention to detail.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts.

  • Collaborative and proactive team player with a determined attitude when faced with ambiguity, able to demonstrate critical thinking and assess the pros and cons of your approach.

  • Understanding the value of providing good customer service to both internal and external customers, wanting to meet and exceed customer expectations through delivering high quality work with proactive communications.
