About us

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Prison Healthcare Occupational Therapy Service for a Band 7 Highly Specialist Clinical Occupational Therapist 37 hours per week to join our team as we expand and develop our service.  We deliver an innovative, forward-looking and collaborative service providing person-centred, occupation-focussed rehabilitation for the prison populations within NHS Tayside - HMP Perth, HMP Castle Huntly and HMP & YOI Bella Centre in Dundee.  The Occupational Therapy service is fully integrated within Prison Healthcare, working collaboratively with all health teams, the Scottish Prison Service and external agencies.  Contributing to and supporting a successful return to community living following release from prison is a key service objective and outcome for our client group. 

About the role

As an Occupational Therapist working within Prison Healthcare, you will have a unique opportunity to deliver rehabilitation outcomes within a complex multidisciplinary environment and to develop your own clinical skills and specialism across multiple clinical areas due to the variety, complexity and co-morbidity that our patient group presents with. 

Working as a highly specialist Occupational Therapist, the post holder will take a lead  role within the team, working in partnership with the Scottish Prison Service and other NHS and third sector agencies to promote recovery and rehabilitation of people in custody; to improve occupational participation and engagement and ultimately improve personal outcomes. 

The post holder will take a lead role in clinical and service developments including research and quality improvement opportunities to improve clinical practice within agreed clinical areas.   

Training opportunities are actively encouraged to support staff to meet their own development needs and those of our patient population.   We embrace Quality Improvement methodology to support our service development and seek to provide CPD opportunities across all 4 pillars of professional practice. 

This post is supported by a Band 7 Team Lead Occupational Therapist.

About you

This role requires an individual who is passionate about the contribution that Occupational Therapy can make to enabling people with complex and co-morbid health and social care needs achieve whats important to them.  This person will practice and lead with compassion and integrity. The successful candidate will have prior clinical experience of working with individuals with complex needs and co-morbidity of health problems including mental health, substance use, physical health needs associated with the older person as well as cognitive and learning needs.  Skills in assessment and treatment enabling individuals to achieve their potential through occupation-focussed rehabilitation will be essential as is the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a complex multidisciplinary setting. 

The post will involve travel between three prison sites and the ability and willingness to travel throughout the area of service delivery is essential for this post.
