The Maritime Studies Department at UHI Orkney invites applications from a suitably qualified and experienced professional to develop, coordinate and eventually deliver work-based learning for the Hydrogen sector both on land and marine.
The post is for a full-time appointment over six years, based in Orkney but supporting all UHI island-based partners. The postholder will engage with a variety of stakeholders and partners across the sector, around the islands of Scotland.
In development, the postholder will work on two levels:
With industry Stakeholders and UHI partners to identify and help create new models of work-based learning, utilising existing programmes or helping to create new ones.
As a resource to UHI partners who have existing programmes or projects as required.
The postholder will help stakeholders identify appropriate levels of training required in their operation. Levels will be mapped to the SCQF framework. The postholder will help stakeholders identify appropriate duration for training in order to meet staff and operational needs. Training might be short in duration but high in level, for example. It might be training, or a longer course of education, tailored to the needs of the stakeholder and the wider sector. WBL education and training should aim to be transferable and reusable, however, the project recognises that it may develop bespoke training in certain circumstances.
The postholder will:
• have a proven track record of working, preferably hands-on, in the Hydrogen Industry.
• be educated to an appropriate level in relation to their significant experience.
• have experience of the management of safety protocols in hazardous, low flashpoint environments.
• have wider knowledge/experience of the sector including renewables, low-carbon and/or zero-emissions technologies
• have experience in training others in a workplace environment
• preferably have a background in engineering, and/or control systems technologies
You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
This post is subject to membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.
Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Mark Shiner: mark.shiner@uhi.ac.uk
Closing Date: 23:59 on Sunday 20 April 2025
It is anticipated that interviews will take place in week commencing 28 April 2025
Please note that interview expenses will be paid for this post, in accordance with Council policy.

About this company

Orkney Islands Council
View full company profileForget images of remote islands - Orkney is well served by superb modern transport links. Forget the idea of a few people in the middle of no-where - Orkney is home to over 20,000 people. Orkney may bring to mind certain images, but the chances are they are, to say the least, a little off the mark. Sure, we're a bit off the beaten track, but the needs of our community are just the same as anywhere else. And, as a result, the opportunities we can offer you are comparable with those you'll find elsewhere. Of course, there are a few differences: for starters Orkney consists of 100,000 hectares spread over 70+ small islands (19 of which are inhabited), so, like our service users, you'll need to make the most of the transportation links which are vital to Orkney's social and economic well-being. Orkney Islands Council may be the smallest local authority in Scotland, but we can offer some big challenges. And big opportunities. This could be your big chance to make the move, and make a difference. OIC has an impact on many aspects of everyday life. With around 1,800 staff, we are also the county’s biggest employer.
