Full Job Description

We are seeking talented and experienced candidates for a prestigious Legal Director role for the UK's largest mutual life, pensions and investment company. This is a new role created to support a growing and ambitious business.

Reporting directly to the Group General Counsel the role is part of the Group Legal Senior Leadership Team. This is a key hire to support the Group General Counsel in the provision of strategic legal advice and the management of legal risk across the Royal London Group.

The role will provide support to the Group General Counsel in setting and delivering the strategy and operating model for the Group Legal function.

In this role you will undertake a range of legal activities and use your skills and knowledge to collaborate and develop key relationships with colleagues across the Royal London Group; being the key business partner for Policy & External communications, Company Secretariat, Investment and Treasury and Sustainability functions.

About the role

  • Acts as a strategic legal adviser to the RL Group, supporting in the shaping and delivery of strategic business initiatives and the key priorities of individual functions and business areas.

  • Responsible for business partnering with the Policy & External Communications, Sustainability, Investment, Treasury and Group Company Secretarial Teams.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the Legal Team act as strategic legal advisers to the whole RL Group and support the Group General Counsel provide strategic advice to the GEC and governing bodies.

  • Ensure the provision of cost-effective legal services to the Royal London Group and develop appropriate skills and capabilities across the Legal Team to enable this. Take responsibility for outsourced legal advice, challenge where appropriate, interpret, and communicate external legal advice in a commercial and strategic manner for the Royal London Group.

  • Support the General Counsel; and work closely with the Head of Legal Operations in setting and delivering the strategy, people plan and operating model for the Group Legal function. Ensure the team structure and roles within it support the delivery of the RL Group's demand for legal services (both current and future).

    Highly experienced solicitor with significant leadership capability and proven management skills/experience; preferred experience of Life & Pensions Insurance Groups.

  • Practical experience covering a wide range of legal matters; including company law, corporate finance and corporate insurance.

  • Solid awareness of the principles of corporate governance, FCA/PRA regulations and impact on the RL Group.

  • Experience in leading projects and people in delivery of business goals.

  • Able to think laterally and has developed a track record of delivering business focused solutions.

  • Able to identify issues/problems (including those outside of their legal expertise) and scopes work / takes action accordingly.

  • Able to draft, negotiate and undertake material legal negotiations independently. Independently manages complex transactions and legal components of corporate strategic projects.
