Orkney is regularly voted as one of the best places to live in the UK, so if you are looking to combine your enthusiasm, knowledge and desire to be the Licensing Standards Officer for Orkney with an excellent quality of life, then we would love to hear from you. The postholder will be eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme, which is a career average revalued earnings (CARE) defined benefit scheme, for which the employer contribution paid is currently 15% in addition to the salary paid. A good flexi scheme and good annual leave is also available.

We are seeking a suitable person to be the Council’s Licensing Standards Officer to help the Council meet the statutory duties under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.

This is a new position, reporting directly to the Service Manager. You will have responsibility for a busy and varied caseload of licensing standards (alcohol) work throughout Orkney. You will respond to consultations on licence applications, undertake your own inspections of licensed premises along with taking the necessary actions to provide information, guidance and support to ensure compliance and that risks are appropriately managed.

Applicants should be qualified to SCQF 6 (SVQ2, Higher or equivalent). You will need to hold or achieve the Scottish Licensing Standards Officer qualification within 6 months of commencing this post, meaning that you will have a working knowledge of alcohol licensing legislation and the functions, duties and responsibilities of a Licensing Standards Officer.

You will have the confidence to plan and manage your own casework and conflicting demands with limited management supervision, working with partner agencies and other Council services as appropriate. Out of hours work will be necessary, in order to visit licensed premises during trading hours.

You should hold a full current UK driving licence.

This post is subject to Basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Nick Long, Service Manager Environmental Health, on nick.long@orkney.gov.uk or telephone .

Closing Date: Sunday 12 January 2025

Please note that interview expenses will not be paid for this post in accordance with Council Policy.
