Stirling Council is seeking to appoint a Makar to promote poetry reading and writing across the Council area, and celebrate Stirling using poetry as an accessible and engaging medium.

 

 

Working within the Council’s Libraries and Archives Team, the Makar is a Civic appointment for a fixed period of three years.

 

An honorarium of £1000 per annum is payable.

 

 

Relevant travel and other expenses are payable.

 

This is an exciting opportunity to become Stirling’s official Makar. The Council is firmly committed to the intrinsic value of arts and culture, and to the ability of engagement in cultural activity to make a positive difference to our communities.

 

 

The appointment of a Makar is significant - it emphasises the importance of poetry to our communities and to the cultural wealth of our area as a whole, both locally and nationally.

 

The successful Maker will be passionate about poetry and about Stirling, and will have experience of engaging others in learning and developing their own poetic skills and talents. They will be self-motivated and use the role to help others.

 

 

Stirling Makar Remit 2024:

• Write one poem per annum in celebration of the Stirling area/ aspects of life within it. • Assist in the promotion of poetry and the Stirling Makar role throughout the area in partnership with local groups and relevant Council services, including Education, Libraries and Archives, Stirling Council Coms, Culture, Learning and Employability, and on social media

• Deliver a schedule of formal events (3 x 1 hour sessions per annum) which support opportunities for local writers/poets to learn, share and perform

• Support informal poetry reading and writing sessions in community settings which provide one-to-one support for writers/mentoring to those who are hoping to develop their work to the next level including performance or publication (example writers cafes)

• Assist in the recruitment and one-to-one mentoring for a Young Makar for Stirling (age 16-25, role period 18 months)

• Produce quarterly reports for the Provost Panel

• Attend the Provost Panel meetings when necessary and perform work created
