Full Job Description
The Port of Cromarty Firth is a Trust Port which exists to improve, safeguard and develop the Cromarty Firth as a Port for the benefit of stakeholders and is a self-financing commercial business., We are looking for an experienced Marine Pilot to join our team. Based in Invergordon, Scotland, the successful candidate will be responsible for safe pilotage of vessels and structures for the Cromarty Firth Pilotage District. You will train to achieve a Class 1 unrestricted licence, and provide expert knowledge to clients, colleagues & support emergency response., Responsible for the safe piloting of vessels and structures into, out of and between locations within the Cromarty Firth, as required by the Pilotage Act 1987 and local pilotage directions.
- Responsible for the safe and timely berthing and departure of vessels and structures.
- Responsible for passage planning in vessel in conjunction with the Master.
- Responsible for record keeping as required by the Port for the arrival, departure, shifting or piloting of vessels and to the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Port Marine Safety Code.
- Responsible for the written reporting of all collisions, groundings, near misses and incidents
- Responsible for reporting any navigational or equipment defects
- Assist with planning the safe and expeditious berthing or departure of vessels
- Assist with emergency operations in the Port
- Other duties as required from time to time in order to meet the needs of the business, In this role you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient navigation of ships in accordance with relevant laws and regulations, providing expert navigational advice and assistance to ships entering and leaving the port. Role Responsibilities:
- Provide expert navigation guidance and assistance to ships entering and leaving the port.
- Be part of and conduct risk assessments and make recommendations to mitigate navigational risks as part of the Port of Tyne marine management system.
- Communicate efficiently with the ships' crew and the port authority to coordinate safe and efficient ship movements in the river and approaches.
- Monitor weather conditions and make recommendations to adjust ships passage plan and determine towage requirements as necessary.
- Conduct pre-arrival planning and preparation to ensure safe and efficient ship movements including attending meetings both online and in person.
- Respond to any navigational emergencies and provide guidance to the ship's crew and the Port authority to resolve the situation.
- Ensure that all navigational activities are conducted in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
- Participate in regular training and development activities as part of the established CPD system to maintain and improve navigational skills.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all navigational activities as requested by the Harbour Authority.
- Attend any relevant meetings requested by the Harbour Authority.
- Provide expert navigation guidance and assistance to ships entering and leaving the port.
- Be part of and conduct risk assessments and make recommendations to mitigate navigational risks as part of the Port of Tyne marine management system., Peterhead Port Authority, has a fantastic opportunity for a Pilot / Marine Officer to facilitate the safe and efficient conduct of the navigation of vessels within the Peterhead Port harbour limits, in accordance with harbour regulations.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a similar role, experience in ship handling on a variety of vessel types, with various vessel propulsion and manoeuvring systems and knowledge of safety and regulatory responsibilities for pilotage., STCW II/2 (Masters unlimited) Certificate of Competency - applicants with STCW OOW qualification may be considered based on relevant experience. - Excellent communication skills
- Valid ENG1 Medical (or equivalent)
- Previous pilotage experience
- Bridge Resource Management Training
- Proven team player, being flexible and adaptable, and having drive & ambition.
- Emergency Response trained
- Knowledge of management systems/CRM/SharePoint, Master Mariner Unlimited preferred, a Master Mariner limited, or a Chief Mate certificate will be considered if the candidate has served as a pilot for at least five years in a port of a similar nature
- Should hold a valid UK driving licence
- Extensive experience in marine operations and navigational procedures.
- Knowledge of the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to navigation, port operations and pilotage operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make decisions under pressure and handle emergency situations.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Proven ability to represent organisation professionally in various settings., Previous experience as a Class 1 Pilot would be desirable. - STCW 11/2 Master Unlimited Certificate or Royal Navy equivalent is advantageous. - Competent and recent ship handling skills and use of tugs. - Ability to direct actions in a calm manner, particularly in contingency situations. - Valid ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate or equivalent. - Team player. - Must speak English clearly and fluently. - Competent in ship handling and navigation. - Confident in taking the conduct of a vessel and working with a bridge team. - Strong ability to fit into and work well with different bridge teams. - Strong communication skills and an ability to communicate with a wide and diverse range of staff and stakeholder in all situations. - In depth knowledge on ship handling, vessel manoeuvrability and propulsion systems. - Broad knowledge regarding seamanship and navigation. - Understanding about the use and effects of tugs. - Up to date knowledge of relevant legislation.

Please note applicants must have the Right to Work in the UK and stay within 1 hour travel distance from Peterhead prior to applying., Trainee Pilot: Starting Salary : £63,195 (7 month training period). Salary is set to increase with increased pilot progression: Pilot Class IV - £ 80,998 Pilot Class III - £89,596 Pilot Class II - £99,763 Pilot Class I - £114,460
