Full Job Description

Power System Design Engineer will support the Distribution Network Planning & Connection Team (LV - 132kV) by developing and updating the relevant strategies, policies and plans for the SP Distribution/SP Manweb networks to minimise system, economic, safety and environmental risks. You will maximise the performance of the distribution system expected by our customers, stakeholders, maximising returns in both the short and long term. You will be responsible for identifying and developing individual programmes of work and design of complex projects for development and delivery by the districts including asset modernisation, major new connections, reinforcement, and other activities.,

  • Support the business planning process by systematic assessment by performing power system analysis using IPSA/Power Factory or equivalent software's to identify the location, timing and magnitude of constraints and develop strategic network optioneering and planning - including the use of market-based solutions, scheme design, innovation and prioritisation.

  • Support on keeping the network model up to date, enabling accurate and rapid production of design studies and quotes.

  • Support the development of the long-term investment plan for the distribution network including network modernisation, load related investment, system design, maintenance, innovation, and flexibility.

  • Support the development and implementation of investment policies, strategies, and system designs in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of the asset base consistent with legal & licence requirements.

  • Support the development of the distribution network plan and ensure it is in- compliance with planning standards such as NETS SQSS, Grid Code, Distribution Code, P2/8 and other relevant design and asset management standards.

  • Support in management of network risks to minimise system, economic, safety and environmental risks in a cost efficient manner. This will include examining and evaluating alternative schemes and designs and development of network wide asset replacement programmes, policies, strategies and plans.

  • Support on-going activities such as forecasting, flexibility tendering, regulatory reporting, and industry work groups.

  • Support the core maintenance of Power System Analysis tools, Python scripts and automated processes, ensuring full functionality with the latest versions of IPSA+, DIgSILENT, Plant Information (PI)/SCADA, and other platforms as required.

  • Support of the development of new network analysis tools, techniques and automated/coded modelling processes enabling faster and more accurate system modelling of Net Zero solutions including Active Network/Fault Level Management.

  • Support the analysis and preparation of annual Line Loss Factor calculations, Elexon Audits.

  • Support the analysis and preparation of FCP analysis for the calculation of EHV distribution charges.

  • Support on-going BAU activities such as Week24/42/50, data exchange with ESO/TO/DNOs, LTDS and industry workgroups.

  • Effectively use the knowledge of power systems networks design and modelling experience to identify investments that will meet our licence obligations, maintain satisfactory levels of network risk and improve network performance.

    Power Systems Engineering Design experience, preferably experience in performing complex power system studies (Load flow, short circuit, transient stability and power quality).

  • Experience of the GB power system and associated power system analysis software (IPSA & DIgSILENT), techniques and coding solutions (Python, VBA, SQL etc.)

  • Knowledge of network design philosophy and policies, asset management techniques and practices.

  • Ability to deliver highly complex computationally intensive projects quickly and to a very high standard.

  • Ability to analyse and critically evaluate a complex range of technical, regulatory, commercial, and environmental factors when proposing innovative network strategies.

  • Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges and applying innovative thinking where necessary.

  • Good influencing and communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to different audiences verbally and in writing.


  • Experience required:

  • Minimum 8+ significance experience of SCADA configuration and maintenance.

  • Experience of Power System Operators (Control Room Staff).

  • Experts in Power System Analysis

  • Seasoned SCADA experience - Testing

  • Ability to understand the functional aspects of SCADA and support in Functional and Integration testing.

  • Ability to understand different protocols, interfaces, and integration layers.

  • Ability to understand the Web Interfaces, API protocols etc.

  • Desirable if the candidate has got some experience with Cloud based systems - Kubernetes, microservices, containerization, VMs etc.
