Full Job Description

Anderson Knight are proud to be working with a leading organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting heritage, culture, education, and environmental protection. Their work includes investigating and documenting architectural and archaeological sites and landscapes, as well as managing over 300 nationally significant properties.


Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, this Operations Manager - North role will play a critical role as one of four Regional Heads within the Operations Directorate. Established two years ago, the Directorate strengthens the regional presence by unifying various activities across Scotland under one umbrella, ensuring cohesive delivery at local and regional levels.


Role Highlights:


  • Develop the strategic vision and operating plan for the Region, aligned with organisational objectives.
  • Lead the operational management of regional sites, driving conservation, visitor operations, and team engagement.
  • Foster a culture of empowerment, collaboration, and innovation within a large, multidisciplinary team.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders to grow influence, enhance community engagement, and resolve challenges proactively.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Leadership & Strategy: Shape the Region's strategic direction, implementing plans that support conservation, community engagement, and visitor services.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the organisation at a senior level, developing partnerships with government bodies, industry groups, and local communities to grow influence and income.
  • Operational Excellence: Drive continuous improvement in visitor experiences, community initiatives, and revenue generation through innovation and collaboration.
  • Sustainability & Compliance: Advance climate change goals, ensure regulatory compliance, and oversee health, safety, and security standards.

  • Proven leadership experience managing large teams in complex, multi-disciplinary environments.
  • Expertise in building and maintaining partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strategic vision combined with a hands-on ability to drive operational outcomes.
  • A passion for heritage, community engagement, and delivering exceptional visitor experiences.

Desirable Qualities:


  • Relevant professional qualifications or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of heritage, conservation, or public sector operations.

Location: Your base location is flexible, but you will be expected to travel to visit sites and stakeholders across your Region, which includes Shetland, Orkney, the Outer Hebrides
