Full Job Description

To contribute to the delivery and development of an efficient high quality payroll service for VSA, meeting customer needs and in compliance with legal and statutory authorities.,

  • Inputting monthly payroll data into the payroll system in accordance with statutory and contractual obligations and to pre-defined timescales.

  • Processing and monitoring all staffing changes including starters, transfers, leavers and other amendments to salaries and employee data in compliance with policy and payroll requirements.

  • Inputting, calculating and recording sickness payments both statutory and occupational.

  • Inputting, calculating and recording statutory maternity, paternity and adoption payments.

  • Processing travel expenses claims in accordance with agreed procedures.

  • Processing relevant forms including P45 and P6, dealing with queries where appropriate.

  • Preparing information for external agencies e.g. mortgage references, Child Support Agency's enquiries.

  • Processing deductions including Wage Arrestments and Student Loans.

  • Advising employees and managers on payroll issues.

  • Carrying out agreed checking and reporting procedures in line with audit requirements to ensure security and accuracy of payroll data.

  • Carrying out reconciliation procedures after payroll has been processed, resolving problems/anomalies

  • as appropriate, in addition to end of year reconciliations.

  • Processing and calculating data in respect of Pension Scheme members, communicating with the

  • Pensions Trust as appropriate.

  • Any other duties which may occur from time to time provided they are within the postholder's capabilities.

    This will be a busy and fast-paced role where the ability to work to deadlines and tight timescales as well as attention to detail will be essential. You must possess the ability to think logically and will be an effective problem-solver who can respond calmly under pressure. You should be a sound communicator and willing to contribute positively to our fantastic Finance Team., SCQF level 5 or Standard grade passes or equivalent in English and Maths, at levels 1-3 or National 5 pass at A, B or C level


  • Desirable:
  • SCQF level 6 or Higher grade, or equivalent, passes in English and Maths.


  • Experience:

    Essential:
  • Experience of working to deadlines in a busy and fast paced work environment


  • Desirable:
  • At least 1-2 years experience of working in a Finance or Payroll office.

  • Knowledge of basic payroll procedures


  • Key Skills/Aptitudes:

    Essential:
  • Must be able to evidence a high level of numeracy and accuracy

  • IT skills Excel (creating, amending spreadsheets, @ functions); Word (basic letter writing); E-mail.

  • Ability to cope well with busy workload

  • Ability to interact and communicate well with people both face to face and over the phone

  • Well organised


  • Desirable:
  • Advanced Excel

  • Word - Mail merge., Resourceful

  • Ability to use own initiative when appropriate

  • Approachable and helpful

  • Pleasant telephone manner

  • Self- confident


  • Desirable:
  • Ability to communicate well with all levels of staff, Flexibility in relation to having to arrange annual leave with reference to payroll timetable.

    We currently have an exciting opportunity available to join our Finance Department as a Payroll Assistant based at our Castle Street HQ. This will be a part-time permanent position and in return, you will receive competitive salary and benefits., Work Pattern: Working 4 days a week (Mon-Friday), preferably mornings, can be flexible regarding start and finishing times.

    Hourly Rate: £14.65 per hour
