Full Job Description

As a marine social science researcher, you will work on collaborative and participatory projects, with a diversity of communities and stakeholders.

You will understand qualitative approaches to social research and be able to apply them in the field, and you will have some knowledge of theoretical frameworks and epistemologies that guide these approaches.

Working with relevant SAMS Principal Investigators and our filmmaker, you will undertake arts-based social science methods, connecting with communities to understand motivations and perspectives towards low trophic aquaculture through the National Lottery Community Funded project, Unlocking the Power of Seaweed: scaling up seaweed farming in the UK, led by WWF-UK.

You will also work with international partners on the Horizon Europe Blue Bioclusters project, organising workshops, analysing qualitative and quantitative data on Europe's blue biotechnology sectors, and contributing to project deliverables and peer-reviewed papers.

There may be the possibility to support BSc and MSc modules, depending on your experience.

Travel and fieldwork within the UK are required, with potential opportunities for international travel as well.

  • Experience in organising, conducting, and thematically analysing qualitative interviews.

  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to empathise with a diversity of stakeholders and views.

  • Excellent communication skills in writing, presentations, and both informal and formal conversations.

  • Ability to work independently and with a team.

Our employees are the heart of our business. Recruiting and retaining the right people is the key to our success. Rewarding our employees is therefore an important component of our employment package and we have a wide range of benefits on offer to staff. These can enhance your personal and professional development, your health and well-being and your finances.

  • Additionally, SAMS encourages and recognises excellence among staff through various recognition and reward arrangements. We constantly develop and expand the benefits and offers for our colleagues.

SAMS offers a generous salary and pension as well as employee benefits package. We also have supportive policies to assist absence, family and other leave types.
