Full Job Description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.  

The shift pattern is 5/7 and participate in weekend working, extended hours service and public holiday service.

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital/Royal Hospital for Children is one of the largest acute hospital sites in the UK and is home to major specialist services for the West of Scotland and the wider population of Scotland.

We are looking for a suitably qualified, highly motivated and proactive Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly and supportive respiratory service including the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Service (SPVU).  The SPVU look after over 500 patients across Scotland with pulmonary vascular disease, both inpatients and outpatients at the QEUH and Golden Jubilee National Hospital. You will be a patient focused active member of the respiratory multidisciplinary and SPVU team supporting the safe supply of medicines. The unique post holder will work closely with both teams to continue to develop and support the expanding service and while supporting patients across Scotland by liaising with homecare companies and local pharmacy teams.

The successful candidate must be keen to develop their clinical knowledge and skills within a supportive environment and work to provide high quality, patient focused pharmaceutical care to inpatients.  You will be involved in obtaining and documenting accurate medication histories, providing patient education on high risk medicines, facilitating and streamlining both the admission and discharge process at ward level, working with the multidisciplinary team, liaising with GPs, Community Pharmacies and other members of the Primary Care team.  You will be integral to the development of technical services and the extended roles of the Pharmacy Technician.

The post holder will work with closely with the Clinical Pharmacist for SPVU and Respiratory at ward level liaising closely with the wider multidisciplinary team. You will provide support to the dispensary and satellite dispensing areas as an accuracy checker and ward based activities, supporting the provision of pharmacy services to both inpatients and outpatients.  The post holder will be required to be involved in the training and development of Pharmacy Support Workers, Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Technicians and Trainee Pharmacists.

You will be offered training for this post and have a key role in developing the technical roles towards advanced practice. You must be self-motivated with a positive, flexible attitude and be able to maintain, develop and use your own professional judgement and skills for the benefit of the patients.

You must be able to demonstrate an ability to lead and motivate a team. Good communication skills both verbal and written, with the ability to organise and prioritise workload are essential. You will possess an NC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent, SVQ level 3 or equivalent, it is essential to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and you must have an accredited Final Accuracy Checking Qualification e.g.

  • SQA Pharmacy Dispensary Checking Technician Qualification (PDCT)
  • National Pharmacy Association Accuracy Checking Qualification (NPA)
  • Buttercups Training Accuracy Checking Qualification
  • Lloyds Equivalent Checking Qualification

All accredited final accuracy checking qualifications will be considered.

The post holder will work 5/7 (Job share considered) and participate in weekend working, extended hours service and public holiday service.
