Full Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious individual to join the Moredun Research Institute's Immunology group involved in the development and testing of a Streptococcus suis vaccine candidate in collaboration with Moredun Scientific. The objective of the role is to characterise the antibody response of immunised pigs with the aim of understanding the mechanism of vaccine protection. The initial focus is on the induction of bactericidal antibody. If results indicate otherwise, we will assess the role of macrophages and/or T cells following vaccination. If required, alternative hypotheses' will be tested including the role of polymorphonuclear cells in controlling S. suis infection.

  • A PhD in Immunology, Microbiology or Biochemistry

  • Knowledge of biochemistry, immunochemistry, analysing antibody responses in mammals and a basic knowledge of mammalian immunology.

  • The ability to design, run, and troubleshoot assays for antibody function in the control of bacterial infections.

  • General knowledge of mammalian cellular immunology is required to be successful in this role.


  • Experience of testing for the induction of bactericidal antibody responses following vaccination of livestock, in the development and validation of monoclonal antibody reagents and evaluation of antibody responses to bacterial diseases is desirable.
