Full Job Description

The role of the Principal Designer is to oversee the production of discipline specific engineering design deliverables for a range of multi-disciplinary engineering projects across the Mechanical, Electrical, ICA and Civil disciplines within the Water Industry. You will be involved in the initial concept design, design development and management of projects through to detailed design, commissioning and completion across all business streams as required. Working under the direction of the Design Manager, you will be responsible for the following key points within your discipline

  • Provide management support on projects across the business to aid in the design and optioneering exercises to develop initial client concepts or requirements into workable solutions

  • Liaise with internal and external clients to identify their exact requirements

  • Attend site-based surveys or client meetings to understand the needs of a particular project as well as gaining a more strategic view of that clients potential future Technical & Design requirements.

  • In conjunction with other disciplines on the project, manage detailed design tasks to client stage gate and approval specifications

  • Manage the production of design deliverables for specified projects alongside other team deliverables

  • Prepare effective design outputs and contribute technical guidance to projects as required

  • Support both team and personal Continuous Professional Development by demonstrating an awareness and understanding of advances or emergent technologies within your discipline

  • Introduce any improvements that will maximise efficiencies or enhance existing procedures to ensure high quality outputs are maintained

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of designing systems, products and processes that consider efficiency of manufacture and assembly i.e. (DfMA), including the use of standard products and repeatable designs in an off-site, production line facility

  • Design efficiently with respect to waste reduction and re-use of products or processes, including refurbishment techniques where appropriate

  • To submit all design work to relevant British Standards and client specifications. This includes adherence to all applicable guidance and regulations such as WiMES, CDM 2015, DSEAR Regs and Confined Space Regs as applicabl

    To be considered for this position you will have at least 3-5 years previous design experience ideally within an electrical engineering or construction environment As Lead Designer, the ideal candidate should have a strong background in electrical engineering with experience working on solar and EV charging projects. They should have experience in leading a team and be able to manage and mentor other members of the team. Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and other stakeholders is also essential for the role.
