Full Job Description

As the successful Principal Structural Engineer your day-to-day duties will include:

  • Providing a proactive approach to clients and design teams to ensure the best solution is offered to meet their needs, technically and commercially.

  • Providing capabilities in technical expertise and delivery, analysis and designs of sub and/or super structure engineering schemes.

  • Production of and responsible check / review of technical deliverables, including reports, drawings, calculations, specifications, models, drawings in accordance with MML STEP processes.

  • Demonstration of understanding of the development of environmental aspects/impacts of civil and structural design

  • Participation in liaising with external stakeholders within a project delivery environment.

  • Inputting to and monitoring of programmes for scheduling and reporting on deliverables across specific projects, including project budgetary control.

  • Demonstrating technical expertise appropriate to experience, providing in depth knowledge and technical inputs whilst proactively supporting, coaching, and developing junior team members.

  • Attendance at project meetings through all stages of appointed contract for projects.Â

  • Awareness of Structural Engineers Registration (SER) system or SER Certifier Accreditation. Experience of working with SER certifiers on Building Warrant applications of delivering civil and / or structural engineering designs on buildings projects.Â

  • Experience in Built Environment sub sectors such as healthcare, education, bio-tech, defence, custodial, rail, water, energy, industrial, food and drink and commercial sub-sectors within a multi-disciplinary team

  • Ability to liaise with multi-disciplinary teams and colleagues working in various locations, including remotely and overseas, as well as coaching and mentoring junior members of the team

  • Experience of participating in building or infrastructure condition, defect or deterioration surveys and inspections and the preparations of reports

  • Experience in production, review and checking of technical reports, calculations, specifications and other technical deliverables to a high standard of performance.

  • Ability to successfully manage teams, technical delivery, programme and control commercial budgets for our portfolio or projects.

    Desirable Criteria
  • In addition to structural experience, have a good understanding of the civil engineering infrastructure requirements of building projects and be able to liaise with colleagues undertaking this work and report effectively on these aspects, including in relation to roads and drainage statutory approvals

  • The ability to liaise with, manage and report on the inputs of colleagues providing supporting services to the projects such as civil, geotechnical and fire engineering and contamination and acoustic consultancy

  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all internal and external stakeholders

  • Interest in the process to market services to develop business with new and existing clients

  • Understanding, appropriate to level, of contractual issues and risks relating to delivery of projects

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of statutory, technical and environmental considerations and the ability to provide technical solutions to meet those obligations

  • Experience of using analytical/design software such as Robot, Etabs, Staad, CSC, RAM, Tedds and other design spreadsheets or tools

  • Experience of specification preparation including the use of NBS Create or Chorus

  • Familiar with model authoring tools such as AutoCad, Revit, Civils 3D, CADS RC

  • Familiar with information storage, management and collaboration tools such as SharePoint, ProjectWise, 4P Viewpoint, ASite, Aconex, BIM 360, Navisworks, Revizto, Dalux etc.

The Edinburgh office of approximately 100 staff in total, delivers many projects that are important to the local community as well as in the wider Scotland setting and across the globe on national and international prestigious schemes. We currently have projects in the health, education, custodial, defence, rail and water, sub-sectors ranging from £1m to £450m.Â
