Based in Dumfries, Southwest Scotland, Gates (U.K.) Ltd is a major international company specialising in the production of power transmission belts for the automotive and industrial markets. Our continuing success has resulted in this exciting opportunity based in our Dumfries Plant.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As an innovation leader, we are looking for an ambitious, forward thinking, open-minded and well-rounded individual to join our team. Working full-time from our Dumfries office, you will be a Product Development Technologist within our Product Development group.

Reporting to the Technical Director of Global Engineering the core functions of the position include:-,

  • Innovation & Development: Lead the identification and development of advanced fabric and adhesive technologies to drive our synchronous belt development initiatives. Engage in hands-on preparation of experimental coated fabrics, both in production and laboratory settings.

  • Material Substitution Projects: Spearhead projects to identify and validate alternative materials, ensuring smooth and safe implementation using VAVE-CRB tools for efficient project management and approval processes.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with Gates Material Development groups globally, key suppliers, and external partners to transfer cutting-edge fabric and adhesive technologies to our Dumfries PDG.

  • Manufacturing Integration: Partner with Operations Teams to seamlessly integrate new fabric and adhesive technologies into our manufacturing processes.

  • Technical Benchmarking: Provide expert analysis and testing to benchmark fabric and adhesive technologies against competitor products, contributing to global synchronous benchmarking activities.

  • Quality & Standards Compliance: Ensure adherence to all relevant quality standards (GQC tools, DIN/ISO9001, ISO16949) and departmental procedures, maintaining comprehensive documentation.

    Degree in Chemistry, Polymer/Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in product/material development, manufacturing, or automotive industries.


  • Strong technical and analytical skills with a focus on detail and accuracy.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project).

  • DFSS skills including Design of Experiments (DOE), DFMEA, SPC, Weibull, and other statistical tools.

  • Effective problem-solving, project management, and time management skills.
