Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Product Technical Lead to drive the development of a new ground software product in the Bright Ascension 'Helix' product suite. As a key member of our team, the Product Technical Lead will be required to become an expert in the core technologies of the product suite. This role will involve working with colleagues to develop the conceptual design of the product and lead a small team to design, build and test it while also acting as an individual contributor. In doing this, they will work alongside colleagues in Product Management, Project Management and other engineering teams.

We see this role as being full time, although this is negotiable. Ideally we would like this role to be based in either Dundee or Edinburgh, to allow for regular interaction with the teams responsible for Product Management, Business Development, Sales and Marketing.

As a member of the Product Engineering team your key responsibilities would be:

  • Working with Product Managers, customers and other stakeholders to understand requirements and define the product roadmap.

  • Software design, including technical specification, architectural design, detailed design and interface specification.

  • Working with the chief architect and other engineering leads on cross-product concerns.

  • Working with project managers to plan, estimate and track software development activities.

  • Implement, test and debug software.

  • Carry out required software verification and validation activities and produce associated documentation such as test plans and test reports.

  • Manage and supervise the work of engineers on your team.

  • Write customer-facing technical documentation such as user-manuals and tutorials.

  • Contribute to process improvements within the company.

  • Providing 3rd line technical support to customers.

  • Supporting product deployments and integrations.

  • Coach and develop junior engineers.

    Strong java programming skills.

  • Strong analytical and design skills.

  • Development and debugging of quality code and adherence to best coding practices.

  • Track record of working successfully on complex technical projects with a high degree of autonomy.

  • Experience of working successfully with front-end developers and UX designers.

  • Ability to work in a Linux environment using a range of standard development tools.

  • Working with CI/CD tools.

  • Use of automated testing., Works well both independently and in a team, respecting the opinions of others as part of a fast-paced technical environment.

  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills, both for internal and external, customer facing, interactions.

  • Is diligent, creative, and attentive to details.

  • Wants to make a strong contribution to the business, financially but also in terms of team culture and values. You enjoy making an impact and shaping how businesses operates.

  • Is consistently curious, is interested in learning new skills and is open to new ideas and ways of working., Experience of successfully leading a team of developers.

  • Experience of building a software product from inception through to delivery.

  • Use of docker.

  • Deployment & management of software in a cloud environment.

  • Experience of satellite operations.

  • Experience of satellite testing.

  • Experience as a user of satellite data.

  • Knowledge of, or exposure to, space systems in either a commercial or academic context.
