Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Parliamentary office of Liam McArthur MSP for the position of Research and Casework Assistant, supporting the MSP in his role as party spokesperson for justice and the climate emergency, and in his work representing his Orkney constituency.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated and creative team player with a keen, politically astute eye. They will be responsible for assisting with casework on behalf of constituents and the wider Orkney community. In addition, the successful candidate will be involved in assisting with Mr McArthur's work in Holyrood, including supporting the member in advancing his Private Member's Bill, the Assisted Dying For Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill.

Key duties will also include parliamentary research, such as preparing briefing materials and draft speaking notes for meetings, debates and conferences, generating parliamentary questions and FOI requests. Being part of a small team means there may be occasional ad hoc duties. For example, some relief work including communications and diary management may also be required. Therefore, we are looking for a candidate who will be adaptable and ready to embrace changing or additional responsibilities.

The successful candidate may already have some experience in a political environment, or equivalent, and will be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of Mr McArthur in carrying out his parliamentary duties.

While the role will be based at the Scottish Parliament, it will include occasional travel to the constituency office in Orkney, particularly during parliamentary recess. Some weekend work, evening work or irregular hours may be required, for which time off in lieu will be given.

  • Must be proactive on key issues and able to generate new ideas

  • Good communication and organisational skills
