Full Job Description

1. Volunteer Management:

  • Oversee the processes through which individual volunteers sign up, volunteer for, and are deployed onto projects.

  • Assess the suitability of volunteers for projects based on their skills and experience.

  • Proactively search for volunteers to work on specific projects.

  • Mobilise appropriate tech volunteers to contribute effectively to projects supporting third sector organisations.


  • 2. Project Management:
  • Manage the flow of inbound requests for support from third sector organisations.

  • Identify and specify projects suitable for volunteer involvement.

  • Oversee the delivery of projects, including monitoring progress, resolving issues, and liaising with volunteers and client stakeholders.

  • The role will focus on delivering technology projects that have the potential to create widespread social impact.


  • 3. Corporate Engagement:
  • Identify projects suitable for companies that are members of the Tech for Good Alliance.

  • Provide project briefs and work with companies to select, launch, and deliver projects.

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with member companies in the Tech for Good Alliance to leverage their resources and expertise for social good.


  • 4. Programme Development:
  • Record and report on the activity and impact of projects.

  • Develop and enhance project and programme management processes and tools.

  • Focus on creating sustainable and impactful technology programmes.


  • 5. Stakeholder Management:
  • Manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including volunteers, charity staff, and staff within corporate partners.

  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration across all parties involved in projects.

  • Ensure all stakeholders are engaged and aligned towards common goals.

    Role Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Projects and Programmes to join our leadership team. This key role is responsible for the planning, management, and development of the operational delivery of our projects, ensuring effective engagement and deployment of volunteers and partner companies in meaningful tech for good initiatives. Drawing on best practices from similar roles in other technology-focussed organisations, the Head of Projects and Programmes will play a key part in our success in driving scalable social impact through technology., Strong background and track record in the delivery of technology-based projects.

  • Excellent familiarity and experience with project and programme management processes and tools.

  • Proven track record in managing complex networks of relationships between stakeholders in projects, ideally including a volunteer community element.

  • Demonstrable experience in the development and continuous improvement of programme management practices and resource management.


  • Skills:
  • Exceptional people skills to interact with and manage relationships with various stakeholders.

  • Strong organisational and multitasking abilities to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Skills required for managing large-scale volunteer networks.

    About Us: The Scottish Tech Army is a not-for-profit organisation that leverages the expertise of volunteers with digital technology skills to assist third sector organisations in enhancing their reach, impact, and effectiveness through technology. Our origin was as a volunteer initiative created in response to the practical issues of isolation and the need for remote working that were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We work in a collaborative and partnership-oriented manner that is designed to support the development of the tech for good ecosystem in the UK.

    We have a diverse pool of volunteers skilled in various aspects of digital technology including business analysis, software development, data science, and more. Over the past four years, we have recruited around 3,500 individual volunteers and have worked with over 400 organisations and we have a steady influx of new volunteers and requests for support every week.

    In 2022 we launched the Tech for Good Alliance, a UK-wide initiative designed to complement the work of our individual volunteers by engaging with companies in the tech and tech-related sectors to utilise their resources to create scalable social impact and we are recruiting leading organisations that are committed to creating social value for people and organisations across the UK.
