Full Job Description

As a Senior Automation Applications Engineer, you will oversee the review of the customer Machine and system requirements, lead the development of the concept, labor and material costs, and risks towards a competitive winning solution. Your role will entail developing an accurate budget and project proposal, aligning key concept points, sequence of operations and mechanical descriptions to create a custom integrated system to meet the customer requirements. When applicable, you will be required to consider the constraints on the proposal due to technical or industry specific requirements. What would a typical day look like?

  • Working alongside Account Managers, you will lead the technical engagement with the customer from requirements definition, generating concepts, cost development, and presentation of the proposal.
  • Reviewing customer specifications, URS's, while engage the customer directly to determine the hot buttons to solve for.
  • Lead & participate in brainstorming sessions, resulting in a winning solution and concept
  • When possible, develop a 2D or 3D concept with the support of engineering
  • Work with the salesperson to support the Account Plan and Win strategy.
  • Create supporting documents as needed to support strategy using company's core strengths.
  • Develop a defined proposal document that clarifies all customer requirements. Interact with the sales, engineering and management teams to ensure technical alignment. Document technical requirements, project risks, oversee project plans and project change procedures.
  • Identify risks to customer and Convergix, while developing a mitigation strategy for each.
  • Participate in technical advisory roles, as required.
  • Ensure effective handoff to operations for ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in department and procedural improvements.
  • Follow a standardized quoting process, utilizing tools to develop cost estimates and verbal descriptions of equipment.
  • Standardized presentations including capture-plans, executive reviews, and customers reviews.
  • Standardized tools used include varying levels of proposal templates, cost worksheet, CAD tools for concept approach, compliance matrices depending on industry and customer and FAT/SAT criteria.
  • Enhance proposals using technical writers and dedicated Simulation/CAD resources.
  • Leveraging cross business expertise and experience via a knowledge-sharing platform, capturing reference machines and SharePoint/MS Teams or other online software package.
  • This role will be remote with travel to customers and the head office in Arbroath, Scotland.

    HND or degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of industry experience
  • Preferably within highly technical manufacturing industries (e.g. Life Science, Aviation etc.)
  • Experience with Automation Integration
  • Applications Engineering, Mechanical or Controls Engineering
  • Has basic knowledge of:
  • Robotics and end of arm tools
  • Various transport systems, dials, indexing and A-synchronous chassis etc...
  • Misc conveying systems
  • Various bulk feeding systems
  • Precision fluid dispensing
  • Machine Vision Inspection
  • Cure systems Thermal and UV
  • Marking systems, ink, laser
  • Joining technologies, adhesive, ultrasonic, threaded fastening
  • Various packaging systems
  • Traceability,
  • Process Verification and Validation
  • Previous machine design experience is a plus Ability to develop realistic timing diagrams, throughput calculations and validation. Experience in Quoting, Sales and Customer Interaction is preferred. Ability to read and understand mechanical design drawings and Customer Part Prints. Ability to develop basic CAD concepts. Understanding of Electrical & Pneumatic controls architecture preferred. Successfully work with project teams and customers to design and estimate complete systems. Recognize and determine cost factors, such as timelines, materials, labor, tooling, etc. Strong verbal and written communication skills
