Job Opportunity: Senior Environmental and Sustainability Advisor

Location: Glasgow (office-based) with travel to the North of Scotland as required.
Project: Eastern Green Link 2

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Environmental Sustainability Advisor to join an established award winning civil engineering contractor operating throughout Scotland. We are on the hunt for someone to champion the application of the company’s Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Key areas of emphasis include low-carbon construction, biodiversity, zero waste, and pollution management.

This role will be working on one of Scotland’s biggest power transmission links, Eastern Green Link 2 in Peterhead, however you will be based from their head office on the outskirts of Glasgow with occasional visits to sites when required.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and implement project-specific Environmental Management Systems (EMS), ensuring alignment with client environmental standards.
  • Analyse environmental incidents and provide actionable recommendations to address and mitigate risks.
  • Create and deliver internal training sessions focused on environmental sustainability practices.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and supply chain partners.
  • Promote and share best practices to drive improvements in environmental performance.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • In-depth knowledge of UK environmental regulations, ISO14001 standards, and the regulatory landscape.
  • A relevant technical qualification in Environmental Management with at least five years of experience, ideally within the construction sector.
  • Practitioner-level membership of IEMA (or equivalent) with a pathway toward full membership or Chartered Environmentalist accreditation.
  • Proven expertise in mentoring, coaching, and training teams on environmental sustainability topics.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively influence others.

Desirable:

  • Experience within the civil engineering industry.
  • Knowledge of low-carbon construction methods and ecological management strategies.
  • Certification as an environmental auditor.
  • Competence in digital construction platforms and IT tools.
  • Participation in industry networks and established professional relationships.
