Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and talented Senior European Patent Counsel to lead our European IP team. This individual help shape the Company's overall IP strategy and act as a senior advisor to the VP, Chief IP Counsel. They will be responsible for providing IP support to assigned global business units, both directly and through the management of others. In addition, this individual will be responsible, in conjunction with the Chief IP Counsel and in alignment with the Company's global IP policies and procedures, for setting and implementing our IP strategy for Europe. The ideal candidate will be based in one of the following countries: UK, France, Switzerland, BeNeLux or Sweden Responsibilities

  • Works actively with product development personnel regarding the intellectual property rights associated with new product development activities.
  • Communicates and interacts with the in-house and outside lawyers, support, and administrative staff to maintain, monitor, and manage the Company's patent portfolio and freedom-to-operate opinions.
  • Advises business management in European lP legal matters.
  • Provides infringement clearance opinions for new products to assure that the Company can freely manufacture and market new products throughout the world, in accordance with the Company's policies and procedures.
  • Protects the Company's present and future lP endeavors by obtaining appropriate patent coverage.
  • Reviews and advises on licenses and other agreements involving the Company's lP for their designed business units.
  • Manages lP costs by reviewing the Company's patent portfolio and making timely maintenance and filing recommendations, both directly and through the management of others.
  • Manages the Company's IP budget for the assigned business units, including those of their direct reports.
  • Participates in due diligence related to acquisitions of lP for new businesses or products.
  • Participates in lP litigation and opposition proceedings as appropriate including managing outside counsel, review of all legal documents, complaints, briefs, motions, interrogatories, and the like.
  • Ability to interact with technical and business team members at all levels.
  • A working knowledge of European Trademark Law is desirable.

    Substantial experience with or an advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • JD or its equivalent from an accredited law school
  • 10+ years' relevant experience in a major law firm or legal department of a multinational corporation, ideally with prior in house and managerial experience.
  • Admitted to practice before the European Patent Office.
  • Experience with computer process/devices and software related patents.
  • Experience providing IP advise directly to business unit leaders preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and German (desirable)
  • A professional with a high sense of ethics and integrity, who develops a relationship of trust with his/her colleagues in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to provide prompt, proactive and practical business and legal recommendations and decisions.
  • Reasoning ability including the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to interact with technical and business team members at all levels.
  • A working knowledge of European Trademark Law is desirable.
  • Ability to travel less than 20% percent of the time.
