Full Job Description

Currently, we are partnering with Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit on a project funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) and require a Senior Research Fellow (Intensive Care Studies) to join us and help evaluate the effectiveness of short-duration antibiotic therapy in critically ill patients with sepsis., As Senior Research Fellow, you will have the opportunity to capitalise on your experience of acute and/or critical care research while travelling to Intensive Care Units across the UK for data collection. Specifically, you will have exclusive remit to work on the Process Evaluation of a UK-wide randomised controlled trial (RCT) called funded by NIHR HTA, which aims to explore how the intervention is working in critical care, assesses whether it is delivered as planned, and evaluate its content and delivery. Laterally, the role will offer you the opportunity to apply your research expertise in intensive care settings, as well as your advanced research training (ideally, in qualitative and/or mixed methods), collaborating with clinical and research teams at study sites and the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit, while conducting data collection through observations and interviews, both in-person during site visits and remotely via tele/video conferencing. We expect that you will have previous experience in qualitative research and be comfortable travelling independently for data collection (expenses including travel and accommodation will be reimbursed). As such, these face-to-face interactions will enable you to build meaningful connections with study participants and the research teams, allowing you to gather and analyse valuable data that will be later prepared for journal and report publications. This is an excellent opportunity for you as a researcher to transition into a senior role, develop your leadership skills and gain valuable experience that could contribute to you achieving the next step in your academic and research career.

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field including completed (or near completion) PhD or equivalent academic attainment
  • First degree and/or Masters in the relevant speciality (e.g., nursing, psychology, healthcare science, sociology)
  • Experience in acute and/or critical care research
  • Experience in data collection within a clinical environment, including observations and interviews
  • Ability to analyse data and write at a level commensurate with publication in academic journals
  • Ability to independently travel for data collection
