Full Job Description

Applications are welcome for a permanent Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics, which is a 10 PA (40 hours per week) contract with a minimum of 1 SPA based at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The successful candidate will join a team of 13 consultants, 6 Specialty Doctors and 5 Trainees. The Anaesthetic Department at the newly built District General Hospital, which opened in December 2017, offers excellent facilities. The main theatre complex consists of 8 operating theatres and 4 endoscopy/minor procedure rooms.  The operating theatres include a dedicated obstetric theatre; 3 UCV (laminar flow) theatres; 2 integrated (laparoscopic theatres) and 1 theatre designed with the capability to install fixed radiological equipment.  Each theatre has an anaesthetic room.   The Critical Care Unit is located adjacent to the operating theatres and above the Emergency Department.  There is a 16 bed combined Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit with 16 individual rooms

Out of hours commitment is on a resident partial shift rota, approximating to a 1 in 7 rota; this may vary and is likely to include both 1st call and 2nd call activity.    Elective daytime sessions will vary depending on the frequency of on call, averaging 4.5 per week and will be to the operating theatre and on occasions to ICU.

Prospective candidates will require to meet the national entry criteria for this grade: be on the GMC Register, will hold a license to practice and will have a minimum of 4 years of post graduate training, 2 years of which are in Anaesthesia and Critical Care.

The region offers beautiful countryside, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to forests, hills and rolling plains. There is a wide range of activities on offer, with watersports, fishing, birdwatching, golf, mountain-biking or cycling along the network of rural roads and much more.  House prices are low, schools are good and you are within 2 hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lake District and Newcastle.
