NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

INTRODUCTION

This Specialist Registrar post forms part of the West of Scotland Training Programme and will provide Advanced Training in Pain Management in a 12-month program accredited by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The post will rotate between the North and South Glasgow pain units. There will also be the opportunity for experience at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, as well as other adult hospitals in the West of Scotland. In addition, a Pain Management Programme, intrathecal cancer pain service and Spinal Cord Stimulator service operates within Glasgow, offering further training opportunities.

The Specialist Registrar will be supervised by the Regional Adviser in Pain Management. In addition, there are College tutors and Educational Supervisors in Pain Management in all the teaching hospitals on the training rotation. Quarterly assessments carried out during the 12-month programme will contribute to summative assessment, in keeping with the Faculty of Pain Medicine recommendations, and also to the ARCP interview.

Written and verbal details of the training programme may be obtained from Dr Peter Paisley, Regional Advisor in Pain Management. This training programme has been developed by the NHS Education for Scotland West Region Postgraduate Training Committee in Anaesthesia, on which there are representatives of the Training Hospitals, University and Junior Staff. Individual trainees are required to sign a training programme agreement.

Successful completion of the 1-year post will count towards the award of the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).  Study leave conforms to terms and conditions of service for the Specialist Registrar grade.
