Job Description

The purpose of this post is to work effectively with the class teacher(s) to support play-based, child-centered pedagogy within primary.

The main duties of the Play Support Worker are:

  • Working with the class teacher(s), and through sensitive interactions, support children to develop their literacy and numeracy skills in a developmentally appropriate way.
  • To develop positive, nurturing and supportive relationships with children.
  • Taking the lead of the class teacher(s) to develop nurturing and supportive relationships with the children and where appropriate, with parents and carers.
  • To comply with relevant legislation, guidelines and procedures relating to learning, care and health and safety including Child Protection procedures and Health and Safety guidelines.
  • To contribute to the provision of a range of developmentally appropriate, high quality experiences and spaces, outdoors and indoors, which reflects the children’s ideas, aspirations, curiosities and next steps in their learning.
  • To contribute to the development of resources which are open-ended and support a play-based pedagogical approach.

Tingwall Primary School is a non-denominational school located in Tingwall. It provides education for pupils from Nursery to P7 (3-12 year olds), for children from Tingwall and the surrounding area. The school has a Nursery and 4 classes. At present there is a total of 102 pupils on the roll. The current staffing complement is 3 Practitioners in the Nursery, 3 full-time teachers (including a teaching Head Teacher) and 3 part-time teachers in the school. They are assisted by support staff as required to meet school demands. The current Head Teacher is Mrs Margaret Birrell. Requirements

  • The grade of this post is F
  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4202 per hour
  • Permanent Part Time post for 10.0 Hours per Week , 39.00 weeks per year plus 6.24 weeks (pro rata) paid holiday to be taken during school holidays
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
