The Opportunity…

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as our next Welding Engineer, as part of our dynamic team in Nuclear Services. In Nuclear Services, we're at the forefront of providing technical expertise to support crucial projects like new nuclear builds, operating stations, and decommissioning sites.

Working in the Welding Materials Group within Structural Integrity Branch, you will be expected to take a lead role in overseeing relevant manufacturing aspects and proactively managing in-service degradation of systems and components on our nuclear power stations. This includes the expectation that you will undertake some activities at our power station sites, particularly during scheduled outages or emergent plant breakdowns.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with experience in welding metallurgy or corrosion engineering.,

  • Providing advice on all aspects of weld fabrication, including assessing WPS submissions for new and replacement welded components, supporting manual and automated welding activities, and developing repair methodologies for in-service components, all in close liaison with suppliers of welding services.

  • Monitoring the performance of in-service welded components, including delivering outage inspection programmes for welds in steam, feed and gas plant systems, and performing metallurgical assessments of inspection results.

  • Assessing corrosion defects, advising on corrosion prevention measures, contributing to corrosion-related materials selection and repair decisions, and providing technical evaluations of corrosion mechanisms to inform plant safety cases and asset management strategies.

  • Providing central oversight of the fleet corrosion management programme, setting consistent standards for risk-based inspection regimes and defect sentencing, monitoring trends in corrosion defects and remediation across the fleet, and delivering in-house training / communications to promote best practice tools and techniques for corrosion management.

    We're looking for you to hold a high-quality degree in materials science, engineering, or welding engineering, with a solid understanding of steel metallurgy. Additionally, you should have previous industrial experience in relevant sectors such as nuclear, manufacturing, oil and gas, power generation, or welding engineering consultancy., Familiarity with mechanical characterisation and testing of materials, including material qualification and acceptance testing.

  • Knowledge of Fracture Toughness Testing methods and proficiency in data analysis.

  • Understanding of corrosion mechanisms, particularly stress and flow-assisted corrosion, relevant to light water reactors.

  • Demonstrated proactive and self-motivated approach to both technical and non-technical tasks.

  • Strong time management, planning, and organisational skills.

  • Excellent technical writing and communication abilities.

  • Experience conducting audits of the supply chain to ISO-3834 standards.

    We can offer a competitive salary from £54,391 - £71,779 (dependent on experience), and you'll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreements as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.
