Translation Service development duties
- To lead, manage and develop the Welsh translation service, advising on how Welsh translation will affect University strategic development and planning and vice versa.
- Utilising skills and experience of the Welsh language, resolve issues independently, using judgement and creativity to suggest the optimum resolution to issues as they occur.
- Support the development of appropriate translation requests mechanisms including SLAs, monitoring SLA reports and taking actions as required.
- To provide an editorial overview/review of samples of work produced by and on behalf of the University in terms of accuracy, style etc. Operational Duties
- Provide professional expertise on the use of the Welsh language across the University, investigating and analysing all aspects of the translation of the Welsh language, offering advice to senior management on gaps in provision and any strategic impact.
- Develop and maintain a full understanding of the challenges of Welsh translation in an academic institution, creating new approaches and methodologies to address the translation of new concepts to the Welsh language.
- Provide a professional translation and proofreading service to the University, interpreting the requirements of the customer and the subject of the communication to provide contextually appropriate translations, adhering to the compliance requirements of the University.
- Line manage and oversee the work of the Welsh Translation Unit.
- To act as the key contact for all University Welsh Translation requirements,
- To act as a co-ordinator for external translation as appropriate, liaising with colleagues in other educational institutions as needed.
- To promote and raise the awareness of the service and support staff.
- To check samples of Translation work for Quality Assurance purposes, following up any errors, shortcomings and queries with the original translator.
- Analyse the use of the Translation Service on a regular basis and produce a report outlining the unit's performance.
- Manage the budget for external translation costs, training and membership fees with the Admin Officer Specific Technical Duties (as part of above)
- To maintain and develop a suitable University translation memory system.
- To utilise relevant translation technology (post-editing machine translation and the University Translation Memory output) and software to ensure accuracy, consistency, and value for money in relation to translations. General Duties
- To undertake familiarisation with the University, its structures, aims and objectives, compliance requirements.
- To be cognisant of confidentiality and issues around personal and sensitive data when dealing with translation requests.
- Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
- Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.
1. Proven ability to communicate effectively and accurately in both Welsh and English, orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences, and at all levels. 2. Demonstrable cultural awareness in relation to Wales, and the Welsh language. 3. Proven ability to manage and prioritise own workload and to meet tight deadlines e.g. press and web releases. 4. Membership of a recognised Translation Association. 5. Experience of managing a team and dealing with performance and welfare issues 6. Experience of providing interpreting services or willingness to access appropriate training. Qualifications and Education 7. Relevant Professional qualification/NVQ 6 or equivalent experience. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 8. Substantial experience of providing high calibre Welsh<>English translation work in a large organisation. Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within Welsh<>English translation and to be recognised as an authority in the field. 9. Experience of utilising Translation Memory, Machine Translation and Terminology technology Customer Service, Communication and Team Working 10. Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered., 1. Experience in project managing and developing the implementation of a Translation Memory system. 2. Experience of undertaking translation work in or for the Public Sector, preferably within, or for, the Higher Education Sector. 3. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment. 4. Evidence of ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solution.

Based in the University Secretary's Office, the post-holder will lead the Welsh Translation Unit to provide a high-quality English <> Welsh translation service for all departments and Schools. Reporting directly to the Senior Compliance Advisor and Welsh Language Officer and in close collaboration with the Dean for Welsh Language and the University's Welsh Language Academy, the post-holder will provide and develop a service that facilitates the use of the Welsh language across all areas and activities and will ensure the University is compliant with the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards. This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and open-ended. Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6)
