Full Job Description

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is at the heart of energy in the UK. The electricity that our network provides gets the nation to work, powers schools and brings energy to life. Our network connects the nation, so it's essential that it's continually evolving, advancing, and improving. In NGET we are passionate about both operating safely and providing highly reliable quality of supply for our customers. As Zonal Training Engineer, you'll manage our cohort of trainees across the zone, ensuring they gain the relevant experience and knowledge to acquire their National Grid Safety Authorisations, in line with the necessary Safety Rules, Guidance notes and procedures. You'll be responsible for providing technical and engineering knowledge, training, and direction to the candidates who will be studying for various levels of Safety Authorisations. This role is offered as a fixed term contract for 12 months. You'll be covering our Central Zone so we're flexible on your base location and you'll also be able to work from home on a hybrid basis. You'll be required to travel to various sites within the zone on a regular basis. What you'll be doing

  • Manage the training plan and pipeline of all trainees from inception to authorisation.
  • Bring to life lived experiences and utilise best practice methods in line with substation safety rules.
  • Coach and mentor trainees in Procedures and safety rules.
  • Review Trainee logbooks, evidence, and materials to ensure correct level of quality and technical understanding.
  • Elaborate and bring to life formal training information relating to the Safety from the system processes, Electronic Risk Assessment Creation and on site CDM management.
  • Lead on providing innovative strategies to provide training opportunities through simulated exercises, mock interviews and other means.
  • Plan on site experience, ensuring trainees gain the relevant role experience both within the zone and more widely across the operations business where required.
  • Assess the outage plan, seeking opportunities for trainee engineers and contact relevant parties to arrange inclusion in the outage.
  • Liaise with Substation Supervisory Engineers for non-outage experience, ensuring this is planned in accordingly.

With a Level 4 qualification (HNC or equivalent) in a STEM related subject, and holding (or have held) SAP Authorisation, you'll possess excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • You'll ideally have knowledge of the Electricity Transmission system and its associated assets and have effective planning skills. You'll also have knowledge of CDM regulations. You'll ideally have an understanding of NG Safety Rules, Policies and Procedures, and training experience would be an advantage but is not essential.

At National Grid, we work towards the highest standards in everything we do, including how we support, value and develop our people. Our aim is to encourage and support employees to thrive and be the best they can be. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, and offer flexible and tailored support, at home and in the office.

  • Salary of £51,900 to £65,000 + Benefits package + Training and Development.
  • Job requirement car.
  • 26 days annual leave plus eight statutory days.
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. Overall, 18%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps which support health, fitness and wellbeing.
