Full Job Description
An award-winning Edinburgh-based architecture and heritage studio is seeking a talented and knowledgeable CDM Principal Designer to join their small, friendly team. This is a rare opportunity to work in a studio environment that blends contemporary design thinking with a deep respect for heritage and conservation, all while championing sustainability, social value, and flexibility.
The role offers a chance to become a key contributor to a practice that operates across some of Scotland’s most fascinating and complex buildings. With a strong portfolio in listed building refurbishment, conservation, and retrofit for net zero carbon, the studio consistently delivers high-quality work for a diverse range of clients including local authorities, charitable organisations, religious institutions, and private owners. The successful candidate will be integral to the delivery of design services on historic and contemporary buildings alike, providing CDM Principal Designer input across a variety of scales and typologies.
This position would suit someone with a robust understanding of the CDM Regulations 2015, along with demonstrable experience in leading health and safety compliance on live projects. The ideal candidate will have worked closely with architects, contractors, and clients, bringing clarity and confidence to the health and safety aspects of the design and construction process. A background in architecture, surveying, construction management, or a similar discipline would be advantageous, especially where this is complemented by a passion for improving the safety and functionality of Scotland’s built environment.
Day-to-day responsibilities will include providing CDM guidance from the earliest stages of projects, preparing pre-construction information packs, reviewing design risks and mitigations, conducting site visits, and maintaining documentation in line with regulatory requirements. The role also includes helping shape internal best practices and potentially mentoring junior staff in the principles of safe design.
The studio offers a hybrid working model and welcomes applicants from across Scotland, although the position will be primarily based in Edinburgh. There is a strong culture of trust and collaboration within the team, with regular virtual and in-person meetings ensuring everyone is well-supported. Staff are given the tools and autonomy to manage their own time, and the organisation actively encourages a healthy work-life balance.
They are proud to be a Living Wage employer and an equal opportunities employer. Their commitment to community and environmental responsibility is reflected in their pro bono work, volunteering initiatives, and efforts to reduce carbon emissions through local employment and sustainable design.
For someone looking to join a practice where their expertise will have a visible and lasting impact on the future of Scotland’s buildings—where their voice will be heard, and their work will be both respected and valued—this could be the perfect next step. Candidates who enjoy working as part of a close-knit, mission-driven team and who want to play an active role in shaping safer, more sustainable built environments are encouraged to apply.
