Full Job Description

  • Lead and manage a team, ensuring departmental objectives are communicated and engaged with, planning, organising, and delegating work, monitoring progress, and intervening when required.
  • Manage performance, induction and development of the team.
  • Support and guide team members in welfare issues, escalating as necessary to specialist support areas.
  • Lead on the strategic development and delivery of tailored library services for Velindre University NHS Trust staff and students on placement from Cardiff University and other institutions; proactively adjusting the delivery according to customer requirements, and manage performance and quality of outputs.
  • Be responsible for and manage the Velindre University Library Service budget for Velindre University NHS Trust via the NHS Wales finance and procurement systems and lead the selection and acquisition of print and electronic resources to support clinical practice and decision making.
  • Work as a member of the University Library Service NHS team in ensuring provision of services to Velindre University NHS Trust, Cardiff and Vale UHB and Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) are on an equitable basis.
  • Develop the long term strategy for the Velindre Library Service and contribute to the long-term strategic planning and management of the University Library Service interpreting both strategies into work priorities and setting the standards for the service.
  • Contribute to the development of University Library Service initiatives which have a University and Trust wide impact.
  • Undertake the training of others in areas relating to the team's work, including health information databases and critical appraisal.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels, including membership of groups within Velindre University NHS Trust and with relevant external organisations.
  • To develop appropriate communication links with Velindre University NHS Trust clinical and managerial departments (particularly Medical Education and Learning Education and Development); the NHS Wales Library and Knowledge Service Partnership (including participation in Partnership initiatives); the NHS Wales e-Library for Health; as well as the University's Schools, Colleges and Directorates.
  • Participate in any library accreditation or quality assurance exercises undertaken in the NHS Wales Library and Knowledge Services Partnership on behalf of library services to Velindre University NHS Trust
  • Design and conduct expert mediated systematic search strategies using databases/web search engines to underpin clinical practice, patient care, education and research.
  • Provide professional advice and guidance on systematic review and other evidence-based methodologies ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently where they fall within set role objectives, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action and ensuring complex and conceptual issues and solutions are understood by the audience.
  • Gather and analyse data to inform decisions, establishing basic trends and patterns in data and creating reports as appropriate.
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues, creating recommendation reports, supported by evidence-based developments.
  • Plan and deliver projects that have department and institution wide impact, managing the operation of project teams as needed, planning, organising, and delegating work, monitoring progress, and intervening as required.
  • Represent the University Library Service at external seminars/conferences, contributing to raising the profile of Cardiff University through professional activities locally, nationally and internationally., Undertake recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Actively contribute to the provision of outstanding customer service in line with the University Library Service's Customer Care Promise and Customer Service Excellence Award.
  • General Duties
  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance.
  • Abide by University policies, particularly those that relate to Health and Safety, Data Protection and Equality and Diversity.
  • Ensure the ULS regulations are observed.
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

    1. An Undergraduate or Postgraduate Library/Information Science qualification, or equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • 2. Substantial experience of working within the health library sector, preferably within the NHS and delivering services which support clinical practice. 3. Evidence of excellent organisational, managerial and leadership skills including managing one or more teams. 4. Ability to communicate detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people, developing strong working relationships in order to contribute to long term developments. 5. Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered. 6. Evidence of the ability to initiate and deliver successful projects and lead project teams. 7. Able to influence senior decisions which have a strategic impact. 8. Proven experience in dealing with diverse and challenging problems, including researching issues and creating new solutions where no prior precedent exists. 9. Evidence of strong competencies in systematic literature searching across a range of sources, including measuring impact. 10. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key developments within health librarianship and information with a commitment to CPD and a willingness to participate in development activities. Desirable Duties 11. Membership of a professional body e.g., AUA, CILIP Chartership. 12. Experience of managing budgets effectively. 13. Experience of NHS procurement processes. 14. Ability to speak/understand Welsh or a willingness to learn.

You will lead in the provision, delivery and development of equitable health information and library services to Velindre University NHS Trust. You will work as part of a Cardiff University Library Service NHS team, ensuring provision of library and knowledge services to Velindre University NHS Trust, Cardiff and Vale UHB and Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), under Service Level Agreements. As a member of the Cardiff University Library Service Senior Management Team, you will also provide input into the development of the wider university library strategy and development and delivery of library services. The post is full time, 35 hours per week and open ended. Salary: £50,694 to £55,295 per annum (Grade 7) This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you may spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home.
