Full Job Description

Salary Range: £32,546 - £36,130

FTE: 1 (35 hours/week)

Term: Fixed (12 months)

Closing date: 21/05/2025

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a collaborative, industry-funded research project supported through the Network Innovation Funding scheme. We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Research Associate/Assistant to join a 12-month project focused on addressing inverter-based resource (IBR) driven oscillations in Great Britain’s power grid. The role is ideally suited to candidates with a strong foundation in power system modelling, experience using RTDS for dynamic simulation, and a passion for developing innovative mitigation strategies to support the stability of low-carbon, renewable-integrated energy networks.

The successful candidate will conduct detailed literature reviews and contribute to the development of theoretical models relating to IBR-driven oscillations. They will build and maintain sophisticated simulation models using RTDS and other relevant platforms, applying their knowledge to design realistic test cases that reflect conditions on the GB transmission system. Working closely with academic collaborators and industrial partners, the postholder will help define the technical requirements for potential mitigation systems and contribute to validation efforts. The role also involves analysing complex simulation data, producing high-quality technical reports, contributing to peer-reviewed publications, and delivering presentations at relevant meetings and conferences. In addition, the candidate will support project coordination, documentation, and reporting activities.

To be considered for this position, you should hold a PhD (or be near completion) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a closely related discipline. Alternatively, significant industry experience coupled with a relevant degree will be considered. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in power system modelling and simulation, particularly using RTDS, and will have a strong understanding of the dynamics introduced by renewable energy technologies. A track record of contributing to high-quality technical publications, project delivery within interdisciplinary teams, and effective communication with a range of stakeholders will be advantageous. Experience in software tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and Python, as well as familiarity with data-driven methods and signal processing, is also desirable.

You will be joining a dynamic and collaborative research environment tackling urgent challenges in grid stability and renewable energy integration. This project is time-critical and offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on future energy system resilience while working at the interface of academic research and industrial innovation.
