Requirements

The Principal Teacher is directly accountable to the Head Teacher. As identified in ‘A teaching profession for the 21st century, Annexe B’, the Principal Teacher may be accountable for:

• responsibility for the leadership, good management and strategic direction of colleagues
• curriculum development and quality assurance
• contributing to the development of school policy in relation to the behaviour management of pupils
• the management and guidance of colleagues
• reviewing the CPD needs, career development and performance of colleagues
• the provision of advice, support and guidance to colleagues
• responsibility for the leadership, good management and strategic direction of pastoral care within the school
• the development of school policy for the behaviour management of pupils
• assisting in the management, deployment and development of pastoral care staff
• implementation of whole school policies dealing with guidance issues, pastoral care, assessment and pupil welfare
• working in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate

Requirements

Key Responsibilities of the Principal Teacher Role:

• Line Management: Oversee assigned classes, including quality assurance activities, support for learning, RCCT staff, and PSW timetabling.
• Strategic Coordination: Manage the weekly diary in collaboration with the Head Teacher.
• Additional Support Needs (ASN): Lead the referrals process and coordinate with external agencies, including chairing Child Planning Meetings and related support initiatives.
• Curriculum Leadership: Drive the development and implementation of Numeracy, Mathematics, and STEM initiatives within the school.
• Pupil Equity Funding (PEF): Lead key aspects of PEF planning and implementation to enhance learner outcomes.
• Impact Assessments: Track and monitor the effectiveness of Support for Learning (SfL), Nurture, and PEF interventions to ensure positive impact on learners' progress.

Qualifications

Relevant teaching qualification.

Registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.

The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18.
