Full Job Description
Head of Transformation – 2 Year Fixed Term Contract
Are you ready to lead one of the most exciting transformation journeys in Scotland? At Scottish Water, we’re on a mission to become more efficient, effective, and resilient—so we can continue delivering the service that Scotland expects. We’re looking for a visionary Head of Transformation to help us make that happen.
In this pivotal role, you’ll design, develop, and deliver a transformation portfolio that will shape the future of Scottish Water and directly impact how we serve communities across the country.
You’ll lead the development of a new target operating model and organisational structure within Transformation that supports our long-term ambitions. This is a rare opportunity to influence how we work, ensuring our systems and structure are fit for the future.
What You’ll Do
At the heart of your role will be driving productivity and service excellence. You’ll champion
LEAN methodologies, digital innovation, and other tools to deliver better outcomes for customers and communities. You’ll also oversee assurance schemes like ISO 55001 to maintain the highest standards.
Building trusted relationships with external stakeholders will be key, helping them understand and support our transformation journey. Internally, you’ll manage a diverse portfolio of projects aligned with our strategic goals, including shaping and refining the SR27 efficiency plan.
You’ll also help us meet broader ambitions—delivering the SR21 efficiency challenge of £700 million, supporting the SR27 business plan, and advancing goals around service excellence, Net Zero, and people development.
Throughout, you’ll ensure transformation is delivered safely, with a strong focus on staff wellbeing and a culture of sustainable change.
What Success Looks Like
A major milestone will be delivering a net benefit of £100 million during SR21, setting the stage for our longer-term goal of £1 billion in benefits by 2031. Success also means creating a culture where employees feel engaged and confident in managing change.
You’ll build trust with stakeholders through transparency, accountability, and clear value for money.
And by championing service priorities—especially reducing pollution and leakage—you’ll help deliver the transformation objectives outlined in the SR27 plan.
What You’ll Need
This role calls for a strong track record in leading large-scale transformation and communicating it effectively across diverse teams.
You’ll bring deep experience in portfolio management, with a solid understanding of governance, design, analysis, and delivery.
You’ll also have hands-on experience with LEAN principles, digital tools, and other innovative approaches to improve productivity and service.
Confidence working with senior and C-Suite stakeholders is essential, along with the ability to build strong relationships across the organisation.
Bold and inspiring communication will be one of your strengths, helping you bring people with you on the transformation journey. And with a naturally outward-looking mindset, you’ll be ready to spot opportunities and learn from best practices.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time.
You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community. When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As well as your salary & bonus you will also be entitled to a generous monthly car allowance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be at M3 Level. The salary for this role starts from £90,056.00, with opportunities for further review based on performance.
The closing date for applications will be Sunday 15th June, interviews will take place w/c 23rd June.
Ready to apply? Just send us your current CV along with a short, role-specific cover letter (no more than 500 words) telling us why you’re interested in the role and what makes you a great fit.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
We’re here to help.
