Full Job Description
Principal Corporate Risk Specialist (Fixed term / secondment for a period of 12 months)
It’s not every job where you can make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here. The work we do keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from source to tap and from sink to sea. Our activities span the length and breadth of Scotland. From operating water and wastewater treatment works, managing the complex networks of pipes and sewers, to undertaking strategy, planning and investment decisions and working with our customers and communities, our regulators and supply chain partners to protect and enhance our services.
Risk is inherent in everything that we do. Effective risk management is key to ensuring the continuity and resilience of our service to our customers, as well as driving us toward our three key ambitions as set out within the Water Sector Vision:
- Service excellence; adapting to a changing climate, dealing with our ageing assets and meeting our customers’ evolving expectations.
- Beyond net zero emissions; showing leadership in mitigating climate change and enhancing Scotland’s natural environment.
- Great value and financial sustainability; customers will receive great value, now and in the future, and we will be financially sustainable
Within the Corporate Risk Team we focus on the biggest risks (both threats and opportunities) to Scottish Water. Those risks which could significantly impact the services we provide to our customers, our strategic direction, our finances and our people.
Working within the Corporate Risk Team no two days will be the same. We work in a complex, dynamic and ever developing environment, striving to understand the risks we encounter today and how effectively we are managing them.
We also actively considering the threats and opportunities we could face in the future; supporting the identification and understanding of forecasts, trends and patterns, internally and externally, and challenging the business on the best approach to navigating these.
What you’ll do
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to join the Corporate Risk Team for a fixed period of a year. In this time you will gain valuable insight into the world of risk management and the essential activities of Scottish Water.
You will have three key areas of responsibility: :
- Strategic Review Risk Assessment: You will be the key contact for SRC27 Risk within the Corporate Risk Team. You will work closely with Strategy & Regulation to understand the risks to the SRC27 Business Plan’s production and delivery. Key to this activity will be working across teams and disciplines to identify, assess and analyse both the threats and opportunities we face in the 2027-33 period. You will ideally have practical experience of undertaking Monte Carlo risk analysis (@ Risk), and/or the ability to interrogate, interpret and translate the results of such analysis into valuable direction for the business in the acceptance and delivery of the SRC27 plan. You will be able to guide the understanding and activities of peers, external consultants and our regulators, to ensure successful awareness and mitigation of risks. You will support the decision making around the acceptance of the SRC27 regulatory contract and narration of our risk within our external Delivery Plan.
- Business Partnering (Supporting): You will be the key contact for nominated business areas, enabling and supporting risk management activities in those areas. You will build an effective relationships and networks base on trust and transparency. You will ensure understanding of key business processes and activities and develop awareness of individual, aggregated and compounding risk across the business. Across these activities you will be responsible for providing specialist knowledge, expertise and challenge to our people, our decision-makers and our Senior Leaders. You will be a champion for a positive and an effective risk culture. You will promote understanding and awareness of risk and risk management across the organisation; in doing so you will enable our people to be competent at effectively identifying, assessing and managing risks.
- Corporate Governance (Reporting): You will ensure accurate reporting of risks within your areas to key governance groups, which will include Strategic Planning Group (SPG), Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Audit & Risk Committee (A&RC) and Board. You will support the development of Corporate Risk Reporting and take a lead on activities on external risk reporting within our Annual Report & Accounts. You will be the corporate conscious - considering how effectively we are managing risk, challenging where we can improve our activities or approaches, and providing appropriate assurance to governance groups, regulators and the general public.
This role will report to the Head of Corporate Risk and will work alongside existing Corporate Risk Specialists.
What you’ll bring
You will ideally be educated to degree level and hold a suitable qualification in a risk related discipline; you will have a working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative risk assessment. More importantly however you will be able to demonstrate a risk management mindset; you will be able to evidence practical application of risk management and provide extensive knowledge and experience in a risk-based role.
You will be an experienced and enthusiastic people leader, with a track record of supporting, coaching and developing people from different backgrounds and alternative outlooks, with the commitment to maintain a fun and supportive working environment.
A skilled communicator, you’ll have a knack for knowing-your-audience. Whether you’re crafting written documentation, presenting to a group or facilitating a risk workshop; you know how to effectively get your message across or achieve a desired outcome.
You will be a fast learner and able to switch between technical subjects with relative ease. Where required you can deep-dive into detail, but also able to zoom out and see the bigger picture. You will be able to translate complexity into accessible language and ensure clear understanding of what is important.
In all your dealings with colleagues, customers and external parties, you’ll embody the Scottish Water Character – by being Bold, Responsible, Inspiring and Caring, both as a colleague and as a Leader.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This role will occasionally require you to work outside of normal working hours. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our defined benefit pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and generous life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 8. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £48,900.00. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £ 68,510.00
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the Tuesday 6th May 2025
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, driving license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
We’re here to help. Ask us anything.
