Orkney provides a beautiful setting in which to live and work and a wonderful opportunity to combine a fulfilling and challenging career with the best that the islands can offer in terms of lifestyle.

Our vibrant and forward-thinking community is regularly voted one of the best places to live in Scotland. Orkney Islands Council is looking for a diligent and motivated Solicitor to join its legal team.

The post will suit a candidate with a particular interest in property and commercial law, but also a willingness to deal with other areas of work. You will be expected to advise and represent the Council in relation to property law and property related aspects of projects and attend to conveyancing and leasing work.

You will also provide advice on other areas of the law including commercial contracts and procurement law. You should hold a law degree (LLB) and a Diploma in Legal Practice or Diploma in Professional Legal Practice or equivalent. You also should be a qualified solicitor holding (or eligible to hold) an unrestricted Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of Scotland.

You should have the experience to work under limited supervision, with well-developed communication and IT skills and you must have a working knowledge of relevant legislation.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.

This post is subject to Standard Disclosure Scotland clearance.

For an informal discussion about the above post, please contact Karen Bevilacqua, Service Manager (Legal Services), by telephoning 01856 873535 or e-mailing karen.bevilacqua@orkney.gov.uk

Closing Date: 23:59 Sunday 23 March 2025

About this company

Orkney Islands Council

View full company profile
Forget images of remote islands - Orkney is well served by superb modern transport links. Forget the idea of a few people in the middle of no-where - Orkney is home to over 20,000 people. Orkney may bring to mind certain images, but the chances are they are, to say the least, a little off the mark. Sure, we're a bit off the beaten track, but the needs of our community are just the same as anywhere else. And, as a result, the opportunities we can offer you are comparable with those you'll find elsewhere. Of course, there are a few differences: for starters Orkney consists of 100,000 hectares spread over 70+ small islands (19 of which are inhabited), so, like our service users, you'll need to make the most of the transportation links which are vital to Orkney's social and economic well-being. Orkney Islands Council may be the smallest local authority in Scotland, but we can offer some big challenges. And big opportunities. This could be your big chance to make the move, and make a difference. OIC has an impact on many aspects of everyday life. With around 1,800 staff, we are also the county’s biggest employer.
