Full Job Description
As a Senior Permitting Officer, you will assess applications for a range of environmental permitted activities located across the country. An environmental permit sets out the responsibilities and limitations on the activities that we regulate. You will carry out technical assessments according to our processes and regulatory obligations, to protect the environment and local communities. You will also provide mentoring and coaching support to others, to ensure that they deliver high quality decisions on permit applications to tight deadlines. In addition to your own case load, you will work closely with team members on complex, novel or contentious applications, by unblocking and resolving complex permitting issues. This could include supporting customer liaison and case management of applications as appropriate.
At the Environment Agency, we aspire for inclusivity to thrive in our workforce. We embrace equal opportunities and flexible work arrangements, ensuring everyone can contribute and succeed.
In exchange for your hard work, you will have the opportunity to further develop your skills, expertise and career in this fast-paced environment, for example by becoming a national lead, heading up a permit review programme or leading on a business improvement project.
The team
This role is positioned in our fully dispersed Waste Deposit Team within Permitting. We are the first multi-regime permitting team in Permitting, with a dedicated focus on particular installations and waste sectors, including deposit for recovery, landfill, mining waste and onshore oil and gas. Specialist technical knowledge of some sectors and amenity issues, such as: deposit for recovery, landfill, mining waste, onshore oil and gas, noise, odour, dust, air quality or habitats.
Experience in environmental management and environmental risk assessment.
Have experience of environmental permitting, such as site management, providing pre-application advice, making or assessing applications, regulating against or reviewing permits.
Understand the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR).
A willingness to work collaboratively with internal and external partners to build technical resilience, share best practise and knowledge and improve efficiency.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to provide first-rate customer service.
Strong influencing skills.
Make, and justify, sound and timely decisions.
Have experience of training and/or coaching staff in a variety of styles and platforms.
Manage your time and organise your workload, delivering high work standards to agreed targets.
Be computer literate.
