Full Job Description
Do you want to play a leading role in reducing the risk of flooding to homes and businesses across Scotland and improving the quality of our rivers and coastal shores?
We have a vacancy for a Wastewater Catchment Planner within the sewer flooding team. Your primary role will be to understand the risks and opportunities in your allocated wastewater catchment areas through working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. This knowledge will allow you to lead flooding and sewer overflow projects through the option investigation and planning phase, reviewing the evidence required to develop business cases to secure investment for sustainable catchment strategies providing multiple benefits.
These solutions will improve the capacity of the sewer network to reduce customer impact, debris in our rivers and sewerage spills to the environment. The projects can vary greatly in scope, from large-scale sewer upgrade schemes to improvements at a single CSO or customer property, and from city-wide strategic drainage partnerships exploring blue/green infrastructure to being the primary point of contact for customers experiencing the impacts of sewer flooding.
What You’ll Do
You’ll be assigned responsibility for sewer catchments within several Local Authority areas and will collaborate with colleagues across Scottish Water to develop knowledge and understanding of sewer network performance issues and opportunities in these catchments, including the management of surface water. You will establish relationships with external stakeholders, particularly Local Authorities and SEPA, to provide mutual support on overlapping responsibilities and to fulfil requirements specified in the Flood Risk Management Act. You will also play a leading role in driving the objectives outlined in Scottish Water’s Improving Urban Waters Routemap to reduce sewage-related debris in our environment and frequency of spills from combined sewer overflows.
You will work with our framework technical consultants and construction contractors to advance projects through a defined process of scoping, survey, hydraulic model review, optioneering and solution design to a stage where the preferred solution business case is granted investment approval. The next couple of years will be an exciting time at Scottish Water as we transition from one six-year investment cycle to the next, with significant public interest in the impacts of sewer overflows, flooding and climate change.
The role is suitable for flexible and hybrid working but you will be required to occasionally work from offices within the central belt in addition to site visits to project locations across Scotland. A full UK driving licence is needed.
What You’ll Need
To be successful in this role, you’ll need experience working in the water industry and a strong understanding of wastewater networks, hydraulic modelling, and surface water management. You should be able to write clear, well-structured technical reports and presentations that provide focused information and actionable recommendations.
Strong communication skills are essential, as you’ll need to explain complex issues to both internal and external stakeholders, influencing and driving change even outside your direct areas of control. An analytical and organised approach is key, ensuring you gather the right evidence for critical decision-making. Experience with GIS and/or hydraulic modelling software would also be beneficial.
It would be great if you also have programme or project management skills, experience in the management or design of infrastructure projects—whether grey or blue/green infrastructure—and a background in community and customer engagement.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This is a full time (35 hours per week) position. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the 8th of April 2025.
