Full Job Description
BBC Scotland's TV news team is looking for an experienced Senior Journalist to produce Reporting Scotland and the News at Seven. Reporting Scotland is our flagship news programme for BBC One. We make sure we are at the heart of day's big stories. The programme is fronted by a talented team of presenters, with reporters providing engaging packages and live analysis. The News at Seven launched at the beginning of the year. It is our sister programme and goes on air straight after Reporting Scotland on the BBC Scotland channel. We take on the issues affecting our audience, offering analysis and guest interviews. We also find community stories and celebrate Scottish culture. We present the news in a more informal and conversational tone. This is an opportunity for someone to help us shape the content we provide for our audience. As a senior journalist you will be called on to deal with the big news stories of the day. Your editorial experience also means you will be outputting programmes. You'll guide a team of journalists and technical staff to deliver your vision. We want to hear from you even if you haven't worked in TV. We will provide you with the technical training to get you up to speed. What's more important is that you come to the role with good news judgement, loads of creative ideas, and an enthusiasm for how we are shaping the programmes we produce. The role requires taking on a variety of shifts and weekend working.,
- Responsible for originating and producing stories which may include scripting, editing, and outputting a range of BBC output.
- Commission and select relevant materials ensuring they meet expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC's editorial guidelines.
- Allocate work to a team and check progress; ensure the professional contribution of staff and the quality of output.
- Deliver journalism of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources..
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial broadcast journalism experience. - Ability to work effectively as a member of more than one team. Resolving conflicts as necessary.
- Ability to manage resources, staff, and technical facilities, in order to make challenging broadcasting in the most cost effective manner.
- Prioritises and plans activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
- Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
- The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
- Have a thorough understanding of the Scottish news agenda and the stories which affect our audience.
The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk. We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here. Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential. We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise. - Excellent career progression - the BBC offers great opportunities for employees to seek new challenges and work in different areas of the organisation.
- Unrivalled training and development opportunities - our in-house Academy hosts a wide range of internal and external courses and certification.
- Benefits - We offer a negotiable salary package, a flexible 35-hour working week for work-life balance and 25 days annual leave with the option to buy an extra 5 days, a defined pension scheme and discounted dental, health care, gym and much more.
